Atomic Machines median: 52 days open

The posting

Atomic Machines is building the Matter Compiler™, the first in a new class of AI-native, all-digital manufacturing systems that build working machines directly from code. The Matter Compiler (MC) is aimed at micro-machines: motors and gears the size of a grain of sand, robots small enough to work inside the body, cooling built directly into the chips that run AI, and the many devices like them that have been waiting on a way to build them. Its first product is PrimeSwitch™, an electromechanical power relay the size of a button battery that carries 150 amps continuous current and opens in 50 microseconds, about a thousand times faster than a conventional contactor. Founded by Jeff Holden — serial entrepreneur, ex-Amazon SVP and Uber’s first Chief Product Officer — the company has raised $250 million to date.

Atomic Machines is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, with offices in Emeryville and Santa Clara.

About The Role:

We’re looking for a sharp, proactive Accountant to join our lean finance team at Atomic Machines — someone who treats month-end close as a process to be engineered, not just executed. Reporting to the Controller, this role owns the GL close and financial reporting, while also acting as a technical partner in modernizing how our finance data moves — connecting NetSuite, our manufacturing systems, and spend-management tools into live, automated reporting over time.

At Atomic Machines, we are inventing the future of how things are made. In this role, you’ll build the financial foundation for a company revolutionizing micromanufacturing and digital fabrication: clean books, strong controls, and a close process that gets faster and more automated each quarter — by building (and eventually directing AI agents to help build) the pipelines and dashboards that make that possible.

You’ll also work directly with the Controller on the next phase of systems integration and the early build-out of an AI-forward finance function, where agentic tools become part of the team — with the judgment and guardrails to use them responsibly. This role can be based in either our Santa Clara or Emeryville office.

What You’ll Do:

You’ll own the full month-end close, and build it — over time, not overnight — toward a more automated, AI-assisted state: scoping automation carefully and putting the right guardrails in place so delegation to AI never outpaces the controls around it.

  • Own the month-end close calendar, coordinating cutoff across AP, payroll, and operations, and build tracking tools that reduce manual chasing.
  • Prepare and post journal entries with full supporting documentation; identify good candidates for templated or AI-assisted drafting, with appropriate review steps.
  • Complete key balance sheet reconciliations (bank, prepaid, fixed assets, accrued liabilities, deferred items), moving toward scripted workflows with exception-flagging rather than blind automation.
  • Prepare the monthly financial statements package for Controller review, including flux analysis and variance commentary, working toward live, auto-refreshing reporting as data pipelines mature.
  • Maintain a clean, audit-ready general ledger, building in automated checks incrementally as you learn where the real risk sits.
  • Build and maintain data pipelines that pull from NetSuite, manufacturing systems, and spend-management tools into a single source of truth, via scripts, API connections, and AI-assisted tooling — grounded in a real understanding of how NetSuite is configured and how data flows through it, since that’s what makes the automation actually hold up.
  • Design live, HTML/dashboard-style reporting that refreshes on current data, working toward a continuous close.
  • Scope what should and shouldn’t be automated or delegated to AI — knowing the difference between a task that’s safe for an agent and one that needs a human in the loop, and building guardrails (data handling, review gates, audit trail) around every AI-assisted workflow.
  • Partner with the Controller on NetSuite optimization and the next waves of system integration as the business scales.
  • Contribute to a central data repository for product cost models.
  • Support tax and audit preparation by organizing financial data and schedules for external parties.

What You’ll Need:

  • 3+ years of accounting experience, ideally with manufacturing, hardware, or capital-intensive exposure.
  • Real, hands-on comfort with technology beyond Excel — you’ve used scripts, APIs, or AI tools to solve a data or reporting problem.
  • Comfortable using AI tools to build and maintain things — even if you’re not a “coder,” you’re unafraid to ask an AI to generate a script, run it, and figure out why it broke.
  • Good judgment about automation risk — you can tell a low-stakes task safe to delegate to AI from a high-stakes one needing human review, and default to building guardrails.
  • Open to growing your technical skillset over time, including basic Python or SQL, as needs evolve.
  • A first-principles mindset — you question assumptions and rebuild processes from the ground up.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge, with working knowledge of leases, debt, equity, revenue recognition, and inventory accounting.
  • Experience with NetSuite or a similar scaled ERP system.
  • High ownership and strong communication — able to explain both accounting logic and technical tradeoffs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.

Bonus Points For:

  • Direct, hands-on NetSuite experience (beyond general ERP familiarity).
  • Experience building automation or dashboards with Python, Google Apps Script, or low-code/no-code tools.
  • Direct experience using AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) or agentic workflows in finance.
  • CPA or CPA-track.
  • Big 4 experience.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
