About AWE

We’re a team of remarkable people, united by one extraordinary mission: keeping the UK safe and secure. The UK’s independent nuclear deterrent has existed for 75 years to deter the most extreme threats to our national security and way of life, helping to guarantee our safety, and that of our NATO allies.

Our work is critical. We’re delivering Astraea, the next warhead for the UK’s nuclear deterrent and pushing the boundaries of nuclear science and technology. But that’s just part of the story.

We support the UK government in a range of vital areas – from counter-terrorism to global nuclear test monitoring to building a world-class community of experts in nuclear science. This is work that protects lives and strengthens national security.

At AWE, you’ll find more than just a job. You’ll find purpose, growth, and a community like no other. Whether you're just starting out or looking to take your career to the next level, this is your chance to learn from the best, develop your skills, and be part of something truly unique.

Be extraordinary at AWE.

About the apprenticeship:

As a Construction Site Management Degree Apprentice, you’ll learn how large construction projects are planned, managed and delivered safely. You’ll work with experienced teams on AWE’s new build programme, developing the skills needed to help manage construction activity on site.

In this role, you could be involved in:

  • helping make sure work on site is carried out safely and in line with agreed procedures
  • supporting teams to keep construction work moving to plan
  • learning how projects are managed to agreed standards, budgets and requirements
  • understanding how construction work can be delivered responsibly, with consideration for the environment and local community
  • working with different teams, contractors and stakeholders to help projects run smoothly
  • checking that work meets the required quality standards and project specifications

Opportunities when you complete your apprenticeship:

After completing your apprenticeship, you’ll have developed the foundations for a career in construction and site management. Possible future roles could include:

  • Construction Engineer
  • Construction Manager
  • Longer term pathway to Senior and Principal Construction Manager

Apprenticeship Standard: ST0047

About you

We’re looking for people who are curious, motivated and interested in how buildings, sites and large projects come together. You do not need to have worked in construction before, but you should be keen to learn, ask questions and solve practical problems.

We’re particularly interested in candidates who can show:

Technical Potential

  • an interest in working things out and understanding how things fit together
  • confidence with maths and using numbers to solve problems
  • a logical approach to solving problems step by step
  • an interest in construction, engineering, buildings or infrastructure

Personal Behaviours

  • asking questions when you are unsure or want to understand more
  • paying attention to detail and taking pride in doing things properly
  • being honest, reliable and willing to take responsibility for your work
  • working well with others and listening to different views
  • staying positive and learning from challenges
  • being open to learning new skills and adapting to new situations
  • communicating clearly with different people, both in writing and in person

Values and Mindset

  • understanding that safety comes first in everything we do
  • taking responsibility for your actions and learning from feedback
  • being comfortable following important rules, processes and standards
  • understanding why careful planning and checking are important
  • curiosity and a willingness to keep improving as you learn

This role may appeal to you if you enjoy:

  • seeing how large buildings, facilities and construction projects are put together
  • using drawings, plans, data and technical information to understand what needs to be built
  • helping projects stay on track, on time and within budget
  • making sure people can work safely on site
  • solving practical problems and finding better ways to do things

Entry Requirements

  • HNC in related subject with merit grade or Level 4 Apprenticeship in relevant subject or equivalent level 4 qualification . If you do not have a Level 4 qualification please look at the other Level 6 Engineering Apprenticeships available as you will not be eligible for this apprenticeship.
  • Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs Grade 4/C or above including Maths and English or equivalent

The Benefits:

  • A starting salary of £24,500 yearly, increasing to £26,000 in Year 2, with further annual salary increases throughout your apprenticeship, subject to satisfactory performance and achievement of apprenticeship milestones.
  • Market leading contributory pension scheme
  • Generous paid holiday entitlement of 270 hours per year, inclusive of Bank Holidays, plus every other Friday off as part of AWE’s flexible working pattern.
  • Access to employee discounts portal — everyday savings on retail, hospitality and leisure
  • Employee Assistance Programme and Occupational Health Services

Alongside these benefits, you will learn from experienced specialists in their fields while contributing to work that supports national nuclear security, threat reduction and counter-terrorism.

Location:

Reading area: AWE Aldermaston and/or AWE Burghfield sites, depending on apprenticeship pathway, placements and business needs. Due to the nature of our work and security requirements, you should expect to work on-site during your apprenticeship and in your role after you complete it. Being on-site means you can learn directly from experienced technical specialists, access hands-on support and build valuable connections across the business.

Start Date: 1st September 2027

Annual leave will not be granted from 1st September until 1st October due to mandatory inductions you are required to complete as part of your apprenticeship. Any leave approved after this point will depend on the training provider requirements for your apprenticeship and must be agreed in advance.

Apprenticeship Duration:

3 year apprenticeship plus up to 18 months for End Point Assessment (up to 54 months total)

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
