Engineer I, Automation

Badger Meter | Melbourne, Florida

Position Summary

The Automation Engineer I supports the design, development, testing, and implementation of industrial automation and control systems for water, wastewater, and stormwater applications.

This entry-level engineering role is a great opportunity for recent graduates and early-career professionals to gain hands-on experience with electrical controls, PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, control panels, and field-based automation systems. You’ll work alongside experienced technical professionals while building the skills to independently support automation projects from design through implementation.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and update electrical schematics, control-panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and other technical drawings using CAD software.
  • Support control-system design, component selection, bills of materials, and technical documentation.
  • Apply foundational knowledge of electrical circuits, PLCs, HMIs, sensors, SCADA, and industrial automation technologies.
  • Participate in customer site assessments to document existing equipment, controls, and project requirements.
  • Review project specifications and drawings to identify technical requirements and potential challenges.
  • Support project quotations by preparing material lists, equipment quantities, and preliminary cost estimates.
  • Test and troubleshoot electrical, hardware, and system-configuration issues.
  • Assist with system commissioning, field implementation, and technical issue resolution.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, project management, field service, and technical support teams.
  • Develop proficiency with Data Flow products, SCADA platforms, and remote monitoring technologies.

What We’re Looking For

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Equivalent relevant technical education and directly applicable experience may also be considered.

Experience

  • This is an entry-level opportunity. No prior professional engineering experience is required.
  • Internships, academic projects, technical training, or hands-on experience with automation, electrical systems, or industrial controls are valued.

Technical Skills

  • Foundational understanding of electrical circuits, control systems, and industrial automation.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with CAD software, or the ability to learn through training.
  • Basic knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, sensors, or industrial communication technologies.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AutoCAD, BricsCAD, or similar design software.
  • Exposure to PLC programming, SCADA configuration, industrial control panels, or remote monitoring.
  • Familiarity with Modbus TCP, serial communications, or similar industrial protocols.
  • Experience with electrical troubleshooting, site assessments, or project estimating.
  • Exposure to automation applications in water or wastewater environments is a plus.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to travel occasionally to customer and project locations.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet applicable company driving requirements.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
