A leader in progressive education for more than 100 years, the Bank Street School for Children provides students, from nursery through 8th grade, an education that engages their natural curiosity, nurtures critical thinking, and helps to develop a sense of community and social responsibility. Through a teaching approach that is fundamentally hands-on and child-centered, Bank Street students develop the courage and confidence to think independently, work collaboratively, understand themselves and others more deeply, and possess the compassion to make meaning of the world around them.

About the Position

The After School Chess Teacher leads an after school course that meets children where they are and encourages a deepening understanding of chess strategy. Working with the After School Administrative Team and under the supervision of the Auxiliary Programs team, the Chess Teacher devises and documents an age-appropriate curriculum for two age groups and shares relevant information with supervisors as needed. This role is well suited to an educator who is energized by teaching strategy and critical thinking to elementary-aged students in a progressive, child-centered setting.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Work cooperatively with administrators and supervisors to create and document age-appropriate chess curriculum for each age group
  • Teach chess strategy in a way that meets children at their current level of understanding and supports continued growth
  • Build relationships with students and create an engaging learning environment

Classroom Community and Management

  • Participate as a member of a collaborative, cooperative After School program, sharing information and strategies to sustain a healthy classroom community
  • Use classroom management skills to run and support an energetic classroom of children while maintaining and reinforcing health and safety rules

Safety and Dismissal

  • Support students in moving safely through the hallways and in and out of the building, following building-wide health and safety regulations
  • Oversee the safe transfer of children to after school programming and dismissal to authorized adults

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma
  • Knowledge of chess strategy and instruction
  • Willingness to collaborate and work as part of a team, as well as develop skills in working with individual children, small groups, and the whole class
  • Curiosity about and commitment to learning more about Bank Street’s approach to this type of learning

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience teaching chess to the age groups indicated
  • Experience managing a classroom and teaching children (experience working with young children a plus)
  • Experience with progressive education
  • Prior experience working as part of the Bank Street community

About Us

Bank Street is a leader in education, a pioneer in improving the quality of classroom practice, and a national advocate for children and their families.

Since its beginnings in 1916, Bank Street has been at the forefront of understanding how children learn and grow. From early childhood centers and schools to hospitals and museums, Bank Street has built a national reputation on the simple fact that our graduates know how to do the work that is right for children.

At Bank Street’s Graduate School of Education, students are trained in a model that combines the study of human development, learning theory, and sustained clinical placement to promote significant development as a teacher prior to graduation. Our children’s programs—Bank Street School for Children, Family Center, Bank Street Head Start, and Liberty LEADS—foster children’s development in the broadest sense by providing diverse opportunities for social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth. The Bank Street Education Center disrupts inequity through system-level change to help design better educational experiences for both children and adults. The College further supports and influences positive outcomes for children every day through professional development programs, research projects, and other key efforts engaging educators, intermediary organizations, and government officials at the district, state, and federal levels.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
