Nevada Gold Mines is seeking an experienced Site Safety & Health Manager to shape and advance a world-class safety culture across a complex mining operation. This role partners with senior leadership to align strategy with execution, strengthen risk management, and deliver measurable improvements in safety performance. The position provides site-wide leadership for Safety, Health & Training (HS&T), with authority to establish governance expectations, challenge operational practices, and escalate material risks or deteriorating control performance requiring leadership intervention.
This role is accountable for advancing a best-in-class Safety, Health & Training (HS&T) function by aligning site execution with enterprise strategy, strengthening operational discipline, and improving overall program effectiveness. The Manager owns the site HS&T management system, annual strategy, governance cadence, assurance framework, performance objectives, and reporting to site leadership, ensuring material risks have clear ownership, effective controls, and verified corrective actions.
At Nevada Gold Mines, our vision is to be the world’s most valued gold mining business by finding, developing, and operating the best assets with the best people. We are committed to a safe work environment sending every person home safe and healthy every day and leaving a sustainable legacy on our host communities.
Responsibilities:
- Lead HS&T Strategy & Execution: Own the site HS&T management system and oversee all aspects of safety, occupational health, and training. Translate enterprise strategy into annual operating plans, governance routines, measurable objectives, and practical field expectations, ensuring effective delivery, regulatory compliance, and alignment with corporate standards and strategic priorities.
- Build and Lead High-Performing Teams: Provide direct leadership to safety, industrial hygiene, workers’ compensation, emergency response, and training functions. Establish clear accountabilities, workforce and succession plans, capability requirements, and performance expectations while fostering continuous improvement and effective allocation of people and resources.
- Drive Operational Excellence: Implement and enhance site-wide systems, including standardized training programs, SOPs, assurance protocols, and data management processes. Define evidence, rating, action-management, and close-out requirements that improve consistency, scalability, and field performance.
- Strengthen Risk Management: Lead site fatal risk and critical control governance by ensuring applicable risks, Critical Control Owners, performance standards, and verification expectations are clearly defined. Monitor safety trends, incidents, risk assessments, and control-verification results; escalate failed or degraded controls; and ensure corrective actions address systemic causes and reduce exposure.
- Partner with Leadership: Collaborate with site and senior leadership, operational managers, risk owners, and cross-functional teams to shape HS&T objectives, influence decision-making, and integrate safety, health, training, critical risk, and workforce priorities into business plans and operating processes. Provide an objective view of performance and challenge practices that do not meet the intended control framework.
- Ensure Compliance, Assurance & Reporting: Maintain compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements and establish a risk-based annual assurance plan informed by exposure, control performance, incidents, operational change, and previous findings. Oversee performance reporting, track findings through verified closure, escalate recurring weaknesses to senior leadership, represent the organization with external stakeholders, and serve as the key liaison with MSHA and state and federal agencies.
- Advance Continuous Improvement: Champion innovation by integrating new technologies, industry practices, corporate initiatives, assurance findings, and operational learning to improve safety outcomes and program effectiveness. Share significant lessons across operating areas and verify that improvements are sustained in the field.
- Plan for the Future: Develop and manage annual and long-range HS&T strategies, operating plans, goals, leading indicators, budgets, workforce plans, and capability priorities aligned with Barrick and Nevada Gold Mines’ safety system. Establish milestones and leadership review routines to monitor delivery, address barriers, and maintain accountability.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field (or equivalent experience) required
- Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible HS&T experience in mining, refining, or another high-risk industrial environment, including senior-level leadership responsibility required
- Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, governing, and improving large-scale safety, occupational health, training, fatal-risk, critical-control, and assurance programs required
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, influence senior and operational leaders without relying solely on direct authority, and translate risk and performance data into practical improvement actions required
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent designation preferred
Technical Knowledge:
- Fatal Risk Management, Critical Control Management, risk assessment, and major hazard management principles
- Risk-based assurance, auditing, governance, action management, trend analysis, and escalation processes
- Incident learning, occupational health, industrial hygiene, emergency response, training systems, and MSHA requirements
