Job Description:
Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the mechanical design and documentation of automated packaging machinery. This role develops machine layouts, assemblies, components, engineering documentation, drawings, and bills of materials that meet functional, safety, manufacturability, and customer requirements. The Mechanical Engineer collaborates with controls engineering, assembly, sourcing, service, and project management teams to support the successful execution of projects from design through startup. Success is measured by the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of engineering deliverables, as well as the ability of designs to support on-time, on-budget project execution while meeting performance, reliability, and manufacturability expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical systems, assemblies, and components for automated packaging equipment.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of material, pneumatic schematics, technical specifications, assembly instructions, and other engineering documentation.
- Translate approved machine concepts and customer requirements into detailed mechanical designs, layouts, assemblies, and manufacturing documentation.
- Select and size servos, motors, gearboxes, actuators, bearings, pneumatic devices, and other purchased machine components to meet machine performance, reliability, safety, and cost objectives.
- Support machine build, debug, validation, and commissioning during Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
- Collaborate with Electrical Controls Engineers to ensure compatibility between mechanical designs and control system requirements.
- Actively participate in design reviews by presenting designs, providing technical feedback, and incorporating agreed-upon improvements.
- Prepare and release engineering documentation in accordance with established engineering processes, standards, and revision control requirements.
- Support investigation and resolution of mechanical design, performance, reliability, and manufacturability issues identified during manufacturing, testing, installation, and field operation.
- Participate in the evaluation and implementation of design improvements that enhance machine performance, quality, safety, reliability, and cost competitiveness.
- Ensure compliance with applicable machine safety standards and engineering design practices.
- Support prototype development, testing, and verification activities to validate machine performance and customer requirements.
- Collaborate with suppliers and sourcing teams on component selection, design reviews, manufacturability, and cost optimization initiatives.
- Provide mechanical engineering support to manufacturing, assembly, field service, and customer support activities.
- May lead, guide, coach, or mentor less experienced team members; be a positive role model for the team.
- Demonstrate flexibility and ability to work on other non-core product lines based on demand.
- Flexibility to take on evolving responsibilities in response to strategic priorities and business needs.
- May travel to company-sponsored training, customer facilities, supplier locations, or other BW facilities, both domestic and international.
Qualifications & Desired Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant mechanical design experience.
- Relevant mechanical design experience in industrial equipment, automation systems, packaging machinery, or related industries.
- Strong proficiency with AutoCAD and 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, or equivalent design platforms.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, machining, fabrication, welding, assembly practices, and design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA).
- Experience selecting, sizing, and specifying mechanical components including pneumatics, bearings, gearboxes, motors, actuators, and power transmission equipment.
- Understanding of machine safety principles, risk assessment methodologies, and applicable industry standards.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electromechanical systems.
- Familiarity with engineering analysis methods including motion analysis, tolerance stack-up analysis, component sizing, and machine performance calculations.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, organizational, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Experience with industrial machinery fabrication, assembly, testing, startup, or commissioning activities preferred.
Compensation
The approximate pay range for this position is $90,000 – $105,000. This range is a good-faith estimate at the time of posting. Final compensation may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, background, knowledge, skills, abilities, and geographic location.
