Position Summary and Responsibilities: The primary duty of the Senior Mechanic DOT position is to perform preventative maintenance on fleet equipment as assigned by the Fleet Manager or Night supervisor. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred but not required. This role is intended for experienced technicians with at least 8 years of experience.
Perform scheduled and routine maintenance on a wide range of equipment including but not limited to tractors, trailers, refrigeration units, forklifts, pallet jacks, cars, vans and lift gates. Demonstrate and model good management and self-management practices in support of Ben E. Keith culture – “R.I.G.H.T” – Respect, Integrity, Gratitude, Honesty, and Trust Provide on-site maintenance for branch locations that do not have fleet shops (if required). Plan, forecast, and execute maintenance functions for monthly (PM). Project a friendly, professional image at all times with a focus on outstanding customer service. Ensure company equipment is in safe, working condition; reports any incidents or unsafe conditions immediately to supervisor. Prioritize multiple, competing priorities, during departure and return delivery windows. Work with delivery and other key personnel to support scheduled and unscheduled market demands. Monitor and follow up on any issues needing corrective action such as personnel matters, logistical coordination, third party/outside repairs, preventative maintenance, etc. Work closely with the Fleet Manager and other colleagues to support operational commitments. Ensure that the BEK administrative requirements are performed accurately and in a timely manner. Specifically, documenting work, accounting for inventory, and completing work orders. Communicate progress and resource requirements to the on-site Fleet Manager. Operate all company equipment safely and in a manner consistent with company policy. Ensure all vehicles are being maintained in a safe, operational condition; verify the completeness and accuracy of documentation whenever necessary. Use available technology and digital tools to enhance fleet maintenance equipment readiness. Specific tools include Dossier and Samsara. Ensure work area is organized, clean and safety conscious. Attend meetings as required. Perform other duties as assigned. These duties may include, but not be limited to off-site support, diesel repairs, hydraulics, welding, and other unscheduled maintenance.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Mechanically and technically inclined. Automotive maintenance, lube/oil/servicing, tires, is required. Expertise in Diesel applications is preferred. Industry certifications (ASE, CDL, Inspection, Brakes, OEM Certifications) are highly valued. Ability to learn and use relevant internal computer applications. Ability to work in a fast-paced, time-constrained environment. Able to coordinate multiple activities and follow through with commitments. Good oral and written communication skills and participate well in a team environment. Must be highly motivated and results oriented, with a strong attention to detail. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Must be able to speak, read and write English. Must be 21 yrs. or older to apply. Ability to operate/drive single axle tractor with 35 ft. trailer (on company grounds). High school graduate or GED are required.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform the essential job functions consistently, safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, and access equipment in confined spaces.
Driver safety is important to Ben E. Keith. We use dash cameras which leverage artificial intelligence to recognize safe driving, capture safety events and improve driver safety performance. The videos are also used to exonerate drivers in accidents. All drivers sign a driver consent form upon hire to confirm their understanding.
