Overview

BJC Health

BJC Health is one of the largest integrated academic health care organizations in the United States and the largest private employer in the state of Missouri. It serves as a driving force for economic growth, clinical excellence and exceptional patient care throughout the Midwest and beyond. Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, BJC and its 47,000 employees operate in two regions as BJC HealthCare in the East and Saint Luke’s in the West. Its dedication to improving urban, suburban, and rural communities across Missouri, southern Illinois, and eastern Kansas is supported by more than $1.2 billion in annual community investment. BJC’s long-standing affiliation with the nationally renowned Washington University in St. Louis and its School of Medicine powers its academic mission in the East, most notably at U.S. News & World Report ranked Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital; as well as at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the state of Missouri. In the West region, Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City serves as a primary training site for UMKC School of Medicine. BJC is consistently recognized as a great place to work, from Newsweek’s ‘America’s Greatest Workplaces’ to Forbes’ list of ‘Best Large Employers.’

Preferred Qualifications

Position Summary

The Director, Enterprise Architecture (EA), is a senior technology leader who leads BJC's enterprise architecture function and serves as a trusted technical thought partner to the Senior Leadership Team. The role is accountable for enterprise-wide architectural direction, including principles, governance, strategy, reference architectures, lifecycle management, and cross-domain coherence. The successful candidate will bring broad technology leadership beyond the traditional boundaries of enterprise architecture and engage in significant forward-looking technology discussions to understand the issue, challenge assumptions, develop a credible point of view, and influence direction.

This leader combines breadth across applications, integration, data, cybersecurity, infrastructure, cloud, platforms, and engineering with the ability to go deep when the situation requires. The Director leads the Core EA team in a federated operating model and ensures architecture accelerates execution rather than becoming a centralized bottleneck. EA is what this person leads, not the boundary of what this person is capable of doing.

Le

Core Accountabilities

  • Lead Enterprise Architecture: Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing Core EA team. Establish clear accountabilities, decision rights, operating rhythms, and role clarity across Enterprise, Domain, Solution, Platform, Data, Security, and Infrastructure Architecture.
  • Serve as a Senior Technical Thought Partner: Engage across major technology decisions, rapidly frame unfamiliar or complex issues, test assumptions, surface choices and tradeoffs, and help shape an enterprise point of view.
  • Shape Enterprise Technology Strategy: Assess where technology is going, determine what matters to BJC and what does not, recommend where BJC should invest, and define how the technology landscape should evolve. Translate that strategy into target states, roadmaps, standards, and investment priorities.
  • Bring Broad and Deep Technical Leadership: Provide credible leadership across applications, integration, data, AI, cybersecurity, infrastructure, cloud, platforms, resilience, observability, and modern engineering practices. Go sufficiently deep to evaluate architecture, operational implications, dependencies, controls, and tradeoffs.
  • Own EA Governance and Decision Rights: Define and operate pragmatic governance that promotes speed, coherence, reuse, and value. Ensure decisions are made by the right roles at the right time, with clear escalation and exception paths.
  • Define Principles, Standards, and Reference Architectures: Establish and maintain actionable enterprise principles, standards, patterns, and reference architectures that reduce fragmentation and guide consistent solution design.
  • Drive Cross-Domain Alignment: Facilitate decisions and arbitrate tradeoffs across applications, integration, data, cybersecurity, infrastructure, cloud, and platforms. Create coherence without undermining domain accountability or delivery speed.
  • Lead Modernization and Lifecycle Strategy: Develop enterprise modernization and lifecycle roadmaps aligned to business capabilities, risk, resilience, financial stewardship, and operational supportability.
  • Enable Delivery: Equip domain, solution, and platform teams with reusable guardrails, patterns, reference designs, and decision support so teams can move quickly while remaining enterprise-aligned.
  • Communicate with Executives and the Board: Translate complicated technical issues for CEO, CFO, clinical executive, and Board-level audiences in terms of business implications, choices, risks, opportunities, investment requirements, and recommended action.

adership mandate: Hire a great technology leader who can lead architecture, not only a great architect who can lead architecture.

Leadership Profile

  • Enterprise technology leader with a demonstrated ability to lead architecture while contributing credibly across a broad technology agenda.
  • Intellectually curious and technically agile, with the aptitude to learn unfamiliar areas quickly, engage deeply with subject-matter experts, synthesize evidence, and form a credible point of view.
  • Balances strategic perspective with current technical depth and can distinguish meaningful technology shifts from hype.
  • Challenges assumptions constructively and influences direction through judgment, evidence, relationships, and executive presence rather than positional authority alone.
  • Communicates complex subjects in clear, approachable business language for technical, operational, clinical, financial, and executive audiences.
  • Balances business value, delivery speed, user and patient impact, security, privacy, resilience, cost, and operational supportability.
  • Creates measurable outcomes, clear ownership, and disciplined follow-through.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible technology experience spanning one or more areas such as enterprise or solution architecture, software engineering, infrastructure, cloud, platforms, cybersecurity, data, integration, or technology strategy.
  • Demonstrated senior leadership of complex, enterprise-scale technology work, including setting direction, making cross-domain decisions, and influencing executives and delivery teams.
  • Experience establishing or significantly advancing architecture capabilities, governance, standards, roadmaps, or federated ways of working. Prior formal leadership of an EA function is valuable but is not required if equivalent enterprise technology leadership is demonstrated.
  • Strong breadth across applications, integration, data, cybersecurity, infrastructure, cloud, and platforms, with evidence of the ability to go deep in complex technical discussions.
  • Demonstrated learning agility and ability to develop a credible perspective in unfamiliar technology domains.
  • Executive-level communication and stakeholder management, including the ability to explain technical issues through business implications, decisions, risks, and opportunities.
  • Experience balancing strategy, architecture, engineering, delivery, risk, cost, and operational realities in a complex organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, engineering, computer science, business, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Healthcare experience and familiarity with clinical and non-clinical ecosystems, interoperability, privacy, resilience, and regulatory needs.
  • Experience with enterprise integration, including APIs, event-driven patterns, messaging, managed file transfer, and interoperability standards such as HL7 and FHIR.
  • Experience with EHR integration and interface platforms.
  • Cloud strategy and modernization experience, including Azure, workload placement, platform engineering, resilience, lifecycle management, and financial considerations.
  • Experience with data architecture, analytics, AI enablement, cybersecurity, identity, observability, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Relevant architecture, cloud, engineering, security, or technology leadership certifications, such as TOGAF or equivalent.

Measures of Success

  • BJC has a clear, actionable enterprise technology and architecture direction that informs investment and delivery decisions.
  • Major technology decisions are made faster with explicit tradeoffs, decision rights, and enterprise visibility.
  • Architecture guidance is practical, reused by delivery teams, and demonstrably reduces fragmentation, duplication, risk, and avoidable technical debt.
  • Executive leaders receive clear technology points of view framed in business terms.
  • The federated architecture community operates with clear accountability, strong collaboration, and consistent outcomes.
  • The Core EA team is recognized as a force multiplier for strategy and delivery, not a review bottleneck.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
