Reporting to the Director, Total Rewards & Systems, the role manages core HR Operations delivery, strengthens controls and service levels, develops the payroll team, and turns approved strategy into reliable, compliant and scalable processes.
This is a hands-on manager role with broad operational scope and growth potential. The successful candidate will help implement the future HR operating model by standardizing appropriate work, eliminating duplication, clarifying handoffs and strengthening service delivery, controls and continuity.
Core Responsibilities
Payroll Leadership and Controls
- Own accurate, timely and compliant end-to-end payroll delivery for a multi-state, multi-site workforce, with payroll as the role’s primary functional depth.
- Lead payroll calendars, processing governance, tax activities, reconciliations, audits, garnishments, off-cycle payments and year-end readiness, including W-2 and related reporting.
- Establish and enforce payroll approvals, segregation of duties, reconciliations, SOPs, backup coverage, escalation paths and issue-resolution protocols in partnership with Finance and Accounting.
- Lead and coach the payroll team; manage payroll vendors and service levels; and continuously improve accuracy, timeliness, employee experience, business continuity and audit readiness.
HRIS, Technology and Data Governance
- Lead day-to-day administration and governance of UKG and connected HR technologies, including configuration, integrations, reporting, security and employee/manager self-service.
- Own HR data quality, role-based access, interfaces, master-data controls and issue remediation, while ensuring clear accountability among HR, IT, Payroll, Finance and vendors.
- Lead testing, documentation, training, release readiness and adoption for system enhancements.
- Partner with the HR Systems Analyst and other HR technology resources to deliver recurring workforce, payroll and HR operations reporting; use data to identify risk, capacity constraints, automation and simplification opportunities.
Benefits and Compensation Operations
- Own benefits administration and employee support, including eligibility, life events, vendor coordination, open enrollment execution, communications, wellness-program operations and required compliance processes.
- Ensure reliable coordination and interfaces among benefits, HRIS and payroll processes.
- Own compensation administration, including merit and bonus cycles, wage-authority processes, salary-structure maintenance, incentive administration, data validation and operational communications.
- Partner with the Director, Total Rewards & Systems, who retains strategy, program design, policy direction, executive recommendations and final approval authority; this role owns administration, implementation, controls, service delivery and timely escalation within approved frameworks.
Enterprise HR Priorities and Operating-model Transformation
- Manage assigned HR Operations initiatives sponsored by the Director through project plans, action tracking, decision logs, risk identification and disciplined follow-through.
- Prepare concise dashboards, executive updates, meeting materials and decision support.
- Coordinate assigned cross-functional initiatives across HR, Finance, IT, Legal, Procurement and business teams; maintain workplans, owners, milestones and escalation paths in partnership with the Director.
- Help shape and implement the future HR operating model, including centralization, shared-services readiness, role and handoff clarity, elimination of duplicate work, service-level design and change adoption.
HR operations excellence and leadership
- Standardize and document processes, service levels, controls and escalation paths.
- Use data and stakeholder feedback to improve service delivery and employee experience.
- Directly manage and develop the Senior Payroll Administrator and Payroll & Compliance Administrator, while partnering with the HR Systems Analyst and coordinating matrix resources across Total Rewards, HR and other functions.
- Protect confidential information and demonstrate sound judgment in high-trust situations.
Qualifications and Experience
- Typically 7–10+ years of progressive HR operations experience, with deep hands-on and leadership experience in multi-state payroll and meaningful HRIS ownership.
- Demonstrated leadership of complex multi-state payroll, major HR technology enhancements or implementations, or significant operational transformations.
- Experience leading cross-functional projects, vendor relationships, controls, governance and executive-level reporting.
- Broader exposure across benefits administration, compensation operations, analytics and HR service delivery.
- Ability to identify risk, frame recommendations, make sound operational decisions within delegated authority, collaborate across functions and escalate material issues with clear options.
- Demonstrated people leadership required, including coaching, performance management, work allocation and cross-training; experience coordinating work through a matrix is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent relevant experience; advanced degree or relevant certification preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
