The posting

The Controls Engineer is responsible for hands-on troubleshooting, maintenance support, and implementation of automation and digitalization solutions within the Livonia plant. This role focuses on improving equipment reliability, supporting production uptime, and enabling machine connectivity and data visibility. The position works closely with maintenance and operations to commission, debug, and sustain PLC-controlled equipment, vision systems, and plant floor data systems in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Standard Duties :

  • Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and automation systems to support production uptime
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, controls, and communication issues on production equipment
  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting and support directly on the shop floor
  • Support installation, startup, and commissioning of automation systems and equipment
  • Program and modify PLC logic, HMI interfaces, and automation sequences
  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain controls, instruments, and automation systems
  • Support machine connectivity for data collection, traceability, and plant systems
  • Assist in implementation and sustainment of dashboards, MES, and data visualization tools
  • Enable reliable data capture and availability from production equipment
  • Install, tune, and troubleshoot vision inspection systems
  • Support integration and commissioning of sensors for process monitoring and quality control
  • Provide ongoing troubleshooting and sustainment support for automation and digital systems
  • Work closely with maintenance teams to resolve controls-related downtime issues
  • Assist in training maintenance and plant personnel on system operation and troubleshooting
  • Support reduction of external contractor reliance through development of internal capability
  • Support modifications and improvements to existing electrical and control systems
  • Develop and modify control logic for sequence, timing, and machine operation
  • Work with equipment suppliers to resolve controls and automation issues
  • Collaborate with maintenance, manufacturing engineering, and operations teams to support plant performance
  • Work independently to identify, prioritize, and resolve technical issues in a small team environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills

  • Strong understanding of electrical theory with the ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot using electrical schematics
  • Hands-on experience with PLC and HMI systems, including basic programming, troubleshooting, and modification
  • Proficiency with industrial automation systems, controls hardware, and equipment interfaces
  • Experience working with industrial computer systems, including Windows-based applications; familiarity with AutoCAD or electrical design tools preferred
  • Basic understanding of equipment networking, data interfaces, and machine connectivity for manufacturing systems
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause problem-solving skills in a production environment
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize technical issues in a fast-paced manufacturing setting
  • Results-oriented with strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks or priorities simultaneously
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with maintenance, engineering, and operations teams

  • Travel is occasionally required, up to 20% of the time.
