About the Role We are seeking a Building Science Engineer who is passionate about the performance of existing buildings and the quality of the built environment. Reporting to the Project Director, the successful candidate will contribute to a wide range of assignments involving building envelope assessments, building pathology investigations, technical audits, asset rehabilitation initiatives, and building performance analyses. This opportunity is intended for a professional with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in building science or a related field and who holds a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation issued by the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ). You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, architects, technologists, and building specialists to deliver sustainable, practical, and high-performance solutions tailored to the needs of our institutional and commercial clients. Key Responsibilities Technical Expertise and Diagnostics
Conduct comprehensive technical audits and building condition assessments (BCAs). Perform façade and parking structure inspections in accordance with Quebec's Bill 122 requirements. Diagnose causes of building deterioration, including water infiltration, condensation, mold growth, and structural cracking. Assess the condition of roofing systems, curtain walls, masonry assemblies, glazing systems, and related building envelope components. Conduct and/or supervise on-site performance testing, including blower door testing, infrared thermography, ASTM water penetration testing, and related investigations. Prepare reserve fund studies and maintenance logs in accordance with Bill 16 requirements.
Expert Witness and Litigation Support
When required, serve as a technical expert in matters involving construction deficiencies, water infiltration issues, or building-related disputes.
Rehabilitation Design and Engineering
Design rehabilitation and restoration solutions for building envelope systems, including roofing, curtain walls, masonry, windows, and glazing systems. Prepare plans and specifications for rehabilitation projects involving roofing, fenestration, parking structures, masonry repairs, and related building systems. Develop technical details, construction sections, and performance specifications in accordance with DDN standards. Perform hygrothermal simulations (WUFI) and thermal bridge analyses (THERM) to mitigate risks of mold growth and premature building degradation. Review plans and specifications for new construction projects as part of the building envelope commissioning process to ensure continuity of air and water barrier systems. Provide recommendations regarding material and product selection (membranes, insulation systems, façade assemblies, etc.) with consideration for durability, sustainability, and energy efficiency.
Advisory Services and Regulatory Compliance
Ensure compliance with the Quebec Construction Code and National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) requirements. Support clients in obtaining environmental and sustainability certifications such as LEED, Passive House, and Zero Carbon Building certifications. Act as a technical advisor or consultant in matters involving litigation, construction deficiencies, or latent defects.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Building Engineering, Construction Engineering, or another relevant discipline. Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ). Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in building science. Demonstrated experience in building envelope systems, rehabilitation projects, technical investigations, and building pathology assessments. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication skills and technical report writing abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites throughout the Greater Montreal Area.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience conducting reserve fund studies and property condition assessments. Knowledge of building envelope performance testing methodologies. Experience in thermography, blower door testing, or hygrothermal modeling. Experience managing multidisciplinary projects. Advanced proficiency with modeling and simulation software, including WUFI, THERM, and HOT2000, is considered a strong asset. Strong team-oriented approach, with the ability to collaborate effectively with structural, mechanical, electrical, and other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery. Excellent listening skills and the ability to understand client needs before recommending technical solutions. Demonstrated autonomy and proactive decision-making skills, particularly when addressing unforeseen construction-site challenges. Exceptional communication and relationship-building abilities, with the capacity to translate complex technical issues into practical, client-focused solutions. Your professionalism on construction sites and your attention to detail in technical documentation make you a trusted partner to both contractors and owners.
