Contract: Freelance / Self-Employed Contractor

Day Rate: Negotiable, dependent on experience. Further details available on application.

About the Opportunity

BSI is looking to appoint experienced fire protection professionals to join our team as Freelance Associate Auditors, undertaking third-party assessments at commercial and industrial client sites across the UK.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a background in fire protection systems, installation and auditing to utilise their technical expertise in supporting the assessment and certification of fire safety installations.

You will undertake assessments across a range of fire protection disciplines, including:

  • Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems
  • Evacuation Alert Systems
  • Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems
  • Kitchen Fire Protection Systems

Working on behalf of BSI, you will assess client installations and associated processes against relevant BAFE scheme requirements and applicable British and international standards, helping to ensure compliance, quality and confidence in fire safety systems.

This is a home-based freelance opportunity involving regular travel to client sites across the UK. You will therefore need to be comfortable with national travel and hold a full, valid UK driving licence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and undertake third-party assessments at commercial and industrial client sites, managing your own assessment schedules and travel arrangements.
  • Evaluate installations, processes and associated documentation against relevant BAFE scheme requirements and applicable standards.
  • Prepare comprehensive assessment reports, clearly communicating findings and providing clients with direction on corrective actions where required.
  • Make recommendations regarding the issue, re-issue or withdrawal of certification.
  • Manage assessment outcomes efficiently, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
  • Successfully complete BSI's comprehensive onboarding and qualification programme to achieve full Assessor status.
  • Demonstrate the required technical knowledge and competency through standardised assessments covering auditing practices and their application.

Required Skills & Experience

We are interested in hearing from individuals with a combination of technical fire protection knowledge and auditing experience.

You will ideally bring:

  • Previous auditing or assessment experience within the BAFE / fire protection installation sector.
  • Experience auditing against BAFE scheme requirements.
  • Knowledge of BAFE schemes, including SP101, SP203-1, SP203-3, SP203-4 and SP206.
  • Knowledge of relevant British Standards, including BS 5839-1, BS EN 15004-1 and BS 5266-1.
  • Ideally, a Level 3 regulated qualification in Fire Alarm Installations, or equivalent technical knowledge and practical experience to work towards achieving this qualification.
  • Experience within commercial or industrial fire protection installations.
  • The ability to communicate technical findings effectively, prepare detailed reports and engage professionally with clients.
  • A flexible approach to travel, with the ability to undertake assessments nationally.
  • A full, valid UK driving licence.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
