POSITION PURPOSE: The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for the design, administration, automation, security, and continuous improvement of Boardwalk Pipelines' enterprise Linux infrastructure. This role serves as a senior technical leader within the System Administration team, partnering with other senior engineers to establish and evolve Linux platform standards, automation strategies, operational processes, and security practices across both on-premises and AWS-hosted environments. The position provides expert-level administration and support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Amazon Linux systems, ensuring the reliability, availability, performance, and security of critical infrastructure supporting business and operational applications. The Senior Systems Administrator leads complex troubleshooting efforts, oversees operating system lifecycle management, drives vulnerability remediation and patch management initiatives, and develops automation solutions that improve efficiency, consistency, and scalability throughout the environment. This role requires a highly motivated and self-directed professional who can independently manage complex technical challenges, collaborate effectively with application, database, networking, cloud, and security teams, and contribute to the modernization of infrastructure through automation, standardization, documentation, and continuous process improvement. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing Boardwalk's Linux platform strategy while ensuring compliance, operational excellence, and alignment with enterprise technology objectives. REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:
Strong hands-on experience as a Senior Linux Systems Administrator in an enterprise environment, with direct responsibility for supporting production Linux server platforms, addressing operational issues, and maintaining system reliability and availability. Demonstrated experience supporting large-scale Linux server environments, including onboarding new systems, maintaining operating system standards, coordinating patching activities, managing lifecycle upgrades, and responding to production incidents. Advanced experience administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Amazon Linux in enterprise production environments. Expert-level knowledge of Linux operating systems, including troubleshooting complex issues related to kernel operations, boot processes, networking, storage, systemd services, SSH, PAM, authentication, and performance tuning. Experience managing Linux operating system lifecycle activities, including OS upgrades, kernel management, package management, filesystem administration, partitioning strategies, and platform standardization. Strong experience leading and improving enterprise Linux patch management programs, including coordination of maintenance windows, outage planning, vulnerability remediation, and troubleshooting patch-related issues across development, QA, and production environments. Demonstrated ability to interpret security advisories and implement remediation guidance from vendors and security platforms such as Red Hat, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Rapid7. Advanced experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management using Ansible, including playbook development, role creation, inventory management, automation framework design, and enterprise standardization initiatives. Strong scripting and automation experience utilizing Bash and related Linux automation technologies to streamline operational processes and reduce manual administrative effort. Proven track record of identifying opportunities to automate infrastructure deployment, server configuration, patching workflows, application agent installation, and operational support activities. Significant experience supporting Linux workloads within Amazon Web Services (AWS), including EC2 administration, EBS storage management, AMI selection, launch templates, user-data scripts, Systems Manager (SSM), and cloud infrastructure standards. Working knowledge of AWS networking concepts, including VPCs, routing, subnets, security groups, cloud account segmentation, and troubleshooting connectivity issues across multiple environments. Experience supporting enterprise security technologies and vulnerability remediation processes, including CrowdStrike, Rapid7, Splunk Universal Forwarder, AWS Systems Manager (SSM), and related monitoring, security, and compliance tools. Strong understanding of Linux security best practices, including SSH hardening, auditing, sudo administration, access controls, key management, privilege management, and compliance-related configurations. Experience managing vulnerability remediation activities, security findings, and compliance requirements within defined remediation timelines. Experience supporting enterprise server build standards, including operating system configurations, storage design, partitioning standards, AMI management, and server provisioning processes Strong knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, CNAME records, name resolution, load balancer connectivity, routing, firewall concepts, and troubleshooting service-to-service communication issues. Experience integrating Linux administration practices with automated provisioning pipelines and infrastructure deployment processes. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to independently investigate complex technical issues, identify root cause, recommend solutions, and implement corrective actions. Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced environments where operational demands, security requirements, cloud technologies, and patching expectations continue to evolve. Strong documentation discipline with experience creating and maintaining technical standards, operational procedures, runbooks, build documentation, and knowledge repositories. Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with application teams, database administrators, cloud engineers, networking teams, security teams, and business stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound technical judgment, and drive initiatives with minimal supervision. Proven ability to contribute to platform standardization, operational excellence initiatives, continuous improvement efforts, and long-term Linux infrastructure strategy. Experience mentoring team members and serving as a senior technical resource within a collaborative infrastructure and operations team.
PREFERRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience supporting infrastructure and applications within the energy, pipeline, utilities, or other critical infrastructure industries. Experience supporting highly available, business-critical applications requiring strict uptime, change control, and coordinated maintenance activities. Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or similar cloud provisioning technologies. Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies, including Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, or OpenShift. Experience supporting Linux workloads in hybrid cloud environments spanning AWS and on-premises infrastructure. Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and collaboration between infrastructure and application development teams. Experience operating in regulated, audit-sensitive, or compliance-driven environments. Experience implementing Linux environments aligned with industry security frameworks such as CIS Benchmarks or NIST standards. Experience evaluating and implementing emerging Linux, cloud, automation, or observability technologies. Experience serving as a technical lead on infrastructure projects involving multiple teams and stakeholders. Experience developing technical standards, reference architectures, or long-term infrastructure roadmaps. Experience mentoring junior engineers and contributing to technical knowledge sharing initiatives.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline or equivalent progressive experience supporting large‑scale enterprise systems in a senior technical role, required.
