The posting

Introduction

We are looking for an Electronics Engineer to join our world-class multidisciplinary team and help solve complex technical problems across a wide range of industries.

The role

At Cambridge Consultants, we help our clients develop breakthrough technologies across industries including Energy and Industrial, Defence and Security, Consumer, Telecoms, Healthcare and Biotechnology, and many others.

As an Electronics Engineer with a focus on printed circuit board (PCB) design, you will work within multidisciplinary project teams to solve interesting technical problems for clients ranging from start-ups to global organisations and government bodies. You'll take ownership of electronics elements of projects, contributing both broad electronics know-how and detailed design of circuits and circuit boards.

We're interested in hearing from engineers at different stages of their careers – you may have only spent a few months in a first job or have several years’ experience. We can provide a wide variety of technical opportunities not often encountered elsewhere. We'll shape the role around the skills, experience and impact you bring, but we’re particularly keen to grow PCB design skills by mentoring, expert design reviews and working with a wealth of experience already in house.

We're less concerned with experience of specific software packages than with a keen interest in solving electronics problems. However, candidates may have experience with tools such as Altium or KiCAD for PCB design, LTSpice or other circuit simulation tools, or HyperLynx for signal integrity simulation, and we'd welcome exposure to any of these areas.

This role is well suited to engineers who enjoy tackling unfamiliar problems, working closely with clients and multidisciplinary teams, and helping to deliver robust, real-world solutions. As your career develops, you'll have opportunities to deepen your technical expertise, broaden your responsibilities, and contribute to the growth of new client opportunities.

What will you be doing?

Some interesting electronics projects that we’ve previously solved include:

  • Collaborating with LEGO to develop LEGO® SMART Play™
  • Design of a low-power, high-performance smart wearable for Accesso integrating multiple radios
  • Developing a novel air-interface and bespoke communication systems for the Ocado Smart Platform controlling hundreds of robots in grocery distribution centres
  • Developing the Iridium Extreme satellite phone, the first truly-global ‘push-to-talk’ mobile communications system
  • Next-generation Explosive Ordnance Disposal for the British Army
  • High altitude 5G phased array for targeted cellular coverage, with internal data-rates of over 10 Tbps
  • Multiple high-performance custom electronics developments for Defence and Security applications

Every project we undertake is different. We are typically creating something new rather than refining an existing solution, so you can expect a steady stream of technically diverse and intellectually stimulating work.

You'll also have access to our extensive in-house facilities, which support every stage of hardware development engineering. These include:

  • Prototype PCB manufacturing facilities, including SMT pick-and-place, vapour-phase reflow and X-ray inspection
  • EMC emissions test facility
  • 8.5GHz 360° antenna test facility

What can you bring?

We are looking for engineers with a genuine interest in electronics, at least a brief period of commercial experience, and a passion for developing innovative technology. We are open to candidates with varying levels of experience and will tailor the role and level accordingly based on the expertise and capability demonstrated during the recruitment process.

This is a client-facing role, so good communication skills, curiosity, and the ability to work effectively in a team is required.

Essential technical requirements:

  • Strong academic background with an electronics-related undergraduate degree
  • Solid understanding of the fundamentals of electronic circuit design
  • Some knowledge of printed circuit board (PCB) design

Engineers who thrive in this role are comfortable taking ownership of technical work, learning quickly when faced with new situations, and applying sound engineering judgement to deliver robust solutions in a client-focused environment.

Because of where this role sits, holding (or being able to obtain) UK security clearance is essential. You must be eligible to obtain Security Check (SC) level security clearance (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/united-kingdom-security-vetting-applicant). You must be able to work in the UK without restrictions in accordance with UK National Law and be prepared to successfully undertake an appropriate level of UK National Security Vetting according to UK Government criteria.

We want the process to work for everyone, so please tell us if you need any reasonable adjustments at any stage of your application — we'll do our best to accommodate them.

By submitting an application to Cambridge Consultants, you confirm that the information provided in this application, together with any supporting documentation, is true, complete, and accurate to the best of your knowledge and belief. Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
