Senior Director, Enterprise Risk Management

As part of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), you’ll work with talented associates to provide oversight and guidance for our risk assessment programs and our risk and risk mitigation methodology that ensure our businesses effectively manage risk.
Enterprise Risk Management is a critical function within the firm’s second line of defense that establishes the bank’s approach to risk management and ensures adherence to strong risk management practices across the organizations. We are seeking a Senior Director to join the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) organization to support our efforts to transform Risk Management, including reimagining methodology design, process execution, risk metrics strategy, and technology enablement in a world of agentic AI. The Senior Director will have the opportunity to apply risk management and analytical skills to some of our highest profile Risk Management projects, including implementing solutions to ensure Capital One’s continued stability and success. This includes bringing unique perspectives and experiences to help us be rigorous, curious, and creative, as well as enabling our organizations to maintain a sustainable and holistic risk profile in order to deliver superior products while also protecting our customers.
This leader must be able to effectively communicate and influence partners across the company and across multiple levels of the organization. Strong problem solving and analytical skills, attention to detail, process/project management capability, and results driven competencies are essential to succeeding in this role. This individual should feel comfortable working with quantitative and qualitative information and can move from the “gray” area to grounded recommendation in an organized and transparent manner.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities Include:
- Actively lead our strategic approach to transform Risk Management: This will include:Identify opportunities to improve our Risk Management processes and execute well-managed change to strategies, methodologies, governance, and reporting elements Synthesize and elevate information to executive levels Leverage data, metrics, and analysis to create a comprehensive approach to monitoring our process improvement strategies as they move through the organization Manage ambiguity and consistently seek to drive clarity amongst team, partners and key stakeholders. Craft storylines that clearly articulate findings, insights, and recommendations. Directly liaise and communicate with senior leadership to move the organization to action.
- Thought Partnership: Develop and maintain relationships with key business leaders to enable improved decision-making around go-to-market strategy.
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor and support the development of less experienced associates on the team.
- Internal Leadership: Responsible for helping to lead and drive internal initiatives including but not limited to recruiting, staffing, diversity & inclusion, social activities, etc.
Competencies
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned risk management professional with strategic leadership skills, and a proven ability to operate effectively in a complex, highly-regulated environment. Candidates should have a passion for leading risk management frameworks that improve our ability to be well managed and ensure we have a best in class enterprise risk strategy.
- Leadership:Able to lead a team through change to drive a culture of strong risk management. Highly collaborative, energetic, results-oriented, and entrepreneurial in nature. Approaches risk management with a forward lean and an orientation towards innovation. Understands and embraces the power of technology, analytics, and automation to drive error-free execution from a second line perspective.
- Strong Business Judgment:Able to employ judgment and experience to make rapid and complex decisions. Able to influence and build consensus among peers and senior leaders leveraging sound logic and intellectual horsepower. Able to identify critical issues and to resolve them quickly.
- Communication:Able to identify critical issues and to resolve them quickly. Exhibits leadership presence with highly developed interpersonal, presentation, and communications skills (written and oral). Communicates easily at all levels of the organization, as well as with external parties including regulators and consultants. Has good knowledge of the regulatory landscape in the financial industry and an ability to interact regularly with the multiple Federal banking regulators with jurisdiction over Capital One.
This role is designated as a hybrid position. You are expected to adhere to Capital One's hybrid policy regarding required on-site presence at your designated office location.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or military experience
- At least 5 years of risk management experience
- At least 5 years of experience in financial service
- At least 5 years of experience in people management
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 5 years experience working with regulatory requirements governing risk management in Financial Services
- At least 6 years of experience leading risk programs, projects, or initiatives across an organization
- At least 10 years of experience in financial services / banking
- At least 8 years of experience in people management

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $238,700 - $272,400 for Sr. Director, Risk Management
New York, NY: $260,400 - $297,200 for Sr. Director, Risk Management
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
