Position Overview
CARIAN is seeking an experienced High Voltage Safety Trainer to develop and deliver practical electrical safety training for personnel working in and around high-voltage electrical systems.
This position combines hands-on electrical field experience, technical instruction, and safety leadership to strengthen hazard recognition, safe work practices, and demonstrated workforce competency. The successful candidate will work closely with safety professionals, field leadership, and project teams to deliver classroom, virtual, and hands-on training aligned with applicable safety standards, equipment, job responsibilities, and site-specific procedures.
This is a hybrid position based in the Akron, Ohio region, requiring regular weekly travel to client offices, utility facilities, substations, and project sites to conduct training and practical competency assessments. Occasional overnight travel and training outside normal business hours may be required.
Key Responsibilities

- Create and maintain training materials, lesson plans, practical demonstrations, job aids, written assessments, and competency evaluations.
- Provide instruction on electrical hazard recognition, identification of energized equipment, nominal voltage determination, and applicable approach and clearance distances.
- Conduct training on shock and arc-flash hazards, risk assessments, job briefings, and safe work planning.
- Instruct personnel on establishing electrically safe work conditions, energy isolation, lockout/tagout procedures, absence-of-voltage verification, and protective grounding, as applicable.
- Demonstrate the proper selection, inspection, use, and care of electrical personal protective equipment (PPE), voltage-rated tools, testing instruments, and protective equipment.
- Facilitate scenario-based training addressing switching safety, induced voltage, backfeed, step-and-touch potential, and electrical emergency response using approved procedures.
- Conduct practical skills assessments, evaluate demonstrated proficiency, identify knowledge gaps, and provide targeted coaching or retraining recommendations.
- Maintain accurate training records, attendance, assessment results, course materials, and retraining schedules.
- Collaborate with safety and field leadership to identify training needs based on field observations, audits, equipment changes, and lessons learned from incidents.
- Monitor training activities to ensure safe conditions, proper equipment use, and compliance with established safety procedures.
- Support continuous improvement of electrical safety training programs, instructional methods, and competency assessment processes.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by an electrical apprenticeship, technical training program, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on electrical field experience, including direct experience with high-voltage electrical equipment and associated safe work practices.
- Demonstrated experience delivering technical training, mentoring electrical workers, or conducting practical competency assessments.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable electrical safety requirements, including OSHA standards and recognized industry safe work practices.
- Understanding of electrical hazards, arc-flash protection, energy isolation, grounding, approach distances, and electrical PPE requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, equipment documentation, and site-specific procedures.
- Strong communication, presentation, and instructional skills, with the ability to engage both experienced field personnel and less experienced employees.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, presentation software, and electronic training documentation systems.
- Ability to work independently, coordinate training schedules, and travel regularly to assigned offices and project locations.
- Ability to conduct classroom and practical training activities, access designated field training areas, and demonstrate equipment use while wearing required PPE, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in electric utility transmission and distribution, substations, industrial power systems, or high-voltage testing and maintenance.
- Experience as a journeyman electrician, lineworker, substation technician, electrical safety instructor, or related technical professional.
- Familiarity with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269, NFPA 70E, and other applicable electrical safety standards.
- Relevant electrical trade credentials, electrical safety certifications, or technical instructor qualifications.

This position involves a combination of field-based training, classroom instruction, and independent preparation and administrative work. Regular weekly travel to multiple client offices, utility facilities, substations, and project sites is required. Work schedules and locations will vary based on training needs and project requirements.
Training activities must be conducted in accordance with applicable site safety requirements and approved procedures.
