Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Job Description

Love writing code that makes big machines move? This role is for you. As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll build the software that helps massive equipment see, think, and work safely next to the people running it. Some days that’s robotics and autonomy. Some days it’s the build systems that keep everything shipping. Some days it’s the safety systems that make sure everyone gets home at the end of the shift. Every day, it matters.

What You Will Do:

  • Design, build, test, and release software for robotic, automated, and safety-critical machines, and then watch it run in the real world.
  • Prove it works. Dig into test reviews and analysis, witness tests in person, and help get software certified.
  • Build and tune the build, integration, and release pipelines that turn “it works on my machine” into “it works on every machine.”
  • Help develop operator and machine safety systems that protect people and equipment on the job site.
  • Bring fresh ideas and new technology, including AI, to make our software smarter and more capable.
  • Solve the puzzles that come up when new software meets existing machines, infrastructure, and products.
  • Share what you know, review code, and help the engineers around you level up.

Degree Requirement Degree required in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

What You Will Have:

  • Communicating Complex Concepts:Compares new or technical features to things people already know. Separates the core idea from the supporting details. Explains things with little or no jargon. Leads with the facts and features that matter most. Notices when people are lost and simplifies on the fly.
  • Effective Communications:Gives helpful feedback and coaching on others’ writing and presentations. Shapes documents and presentations to fit the audience. Balances empathy with backbone when making a case. Communicates well with teammates, leaders, and partners outside the team. Wins people over with solid reasoning. Keeps conversations on track.
  • Managing Multiple Priorities:Spots shifting priorities and confirms changes with management. Understands how current work connects to the bigger goals. Delivers work according to assigned priorities. Handles day-to-day demands while keeping project work moving. Handles 2–3 efforts at once without losing productivity.
  • Technical Excellence:Advises others on evaluating and delivering technical solutions. Knows who to pull in to crack a tough problem. Mentors teammates to grow their technical skills. Coaches others to define, analyze, and deliver great solutions to business problems. Solves technical challenges by thinking through the ripple effects. Owns their results and holds others to the same high bar.
  • Strategic Thinking:Helps carry out the team’s go-to-market strategy. Flags potential partnerships and alliances worth exploring. Explains the strategy to others and invites questions. Tracks market trends, opportunities, and risks, and reports what they find. Makes sound recommendations when the options are complex or conflicting.
  • Influencing Through Expertise:Keeps learning through training and hands-on experience. Understands what motivates the people on the other side of the table. Knows who the decision makers are and how they like to get information. Backs recommendations with evidence. Works in a way that builds a reputation as a trusted expert.
  • Software Product Design/Architecture:Has architected and designed major or multiple products. Lays out architecture options and the tradeoffs between them. Understands design considerations for embedded, real-time, database, operating system, and web environments. Estimates what a proposed design will cost. Leads design reviews and walkthroughs. Weighs the pros and cons of specific designs and architectures.
  • Artificial Intelligence:Works hands-on in an applied AI area such as perception, autonomy, or anomaly detection. Helps define requirements for AI solution design and deployment. Maintains and updates AI systems and equipment. Deploys, develops, or operates AI products and platforms to meet business goals. Tests and troubleshoots AI applications and systems.

What Will Make You Stand Out:

  • 10+ years’ Experience supporting platform level development projects and interfacing with internal development groups
  • Proven experience supporting Product Development for on-road/off-road software engineering projects.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
