Caterpillar’s Building Construction Products division is hiring a Senior Design Engineer in the Global Cab Systems Engineering Team.

In this role, you will be responsible for Cab Systems design, development, and technical support across machine platform and system engineering teams for New Product Introduction (NPI), Continuous Product Improvement (CPI), and New Source Introduction (NSI) programs. You will own Visibility Systems, but also improve Comfort, Visibility, and Controls Systems through Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) projects. This role will be working closely with internal engineering, global strategic procurement teams, and external suppliers. You will be part of a global team with collaboration partners in the US, UK, India, China, Japan and Brazil.

What You’ll Do (Job Duties)

  • Lead the design, development, and strategy of Cab Visibility Systems and related subsystems to provide optimal user experiences within our Operator Stations.
  • Lead CPI & Field issue root cause investigation, testing, & resolution on Visibility, Comfort, and Controls Systems.
  • Support and manage design controls for Comfort, Visibility, and Controls Systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Operator Station Engineers, Electrical & Software engineers, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and the Commercial team to ensure seamless integration into our Operator Stations.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to manage development timing, validation plans, cost, and overall quality.
  • Conduct design reviews, DFMEAs, support prototype and Pilot builds and field testing.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and ergonomic guidelines.
  • Support root cause analysis investigation and resolution of NPI or CPI field issues and warranty claims.
  • Actively support prototype, pilot, and production builds relating to machine platform and Cab Visibility Systems.
  • Maintain documentation including CAD models, BOMs, Technical specifications, and test reports.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in Comfort, Visibility, and Controls System designs.
  • Provide support for the local assembly facilities as issues arise.

What You Have (Core Skills)

  • Degree requirement: Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering discipline; Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.
  • Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
  • Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges. Component and product development or excellent analytical experience. Ability to gain a mastery of complex engineering and manufacturability concepts.
  • Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production. Knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Knowledge of design for manufacturability guidelines, methodologies; ability to use this knowledge to optimize product designs and manufacturing operations.
  • Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Ability to support issue resolution by applying basic engineering knowledge and working with cross-functional teams to identify and address technical challenges.
  • Analytical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to approach problems logically, analyze data, and contribute to the development of practical solutions.
  • Initiative: Intellectual curiosity and be a self-starter with the ability to work independently within a guiding framework.

Top Candidates Will Also Have

  • Experience in Component System design, development, including validation planning and execution.
  • Experience testing mechanical and electrical Component Systems as part of root cause or field return analysis
  • Working knowledge of common sheet-metal, plastics, and machining manufacturing processes, and/or applications. Working knowledge of various material types is also desirable.
  • Working knowledge of bolted joints, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), Tolerance Stacks, FEA, structural design concepts.
  • An understanding of Thermodynamic, CFD, Ergonomic, and User-centered design principles.
  • Proficiency with Creo, surface modeling, and engineering drawings, including experience using Teamcenter Engineering to release product designs.
  • Working knowledge of software as it relates to and affects Visibility, Comfort, and Controls Systems
  • Strong track record of effective supplier interaction, CPPD, and project management.
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships across a matrix organization.

Additional Details

  • Office Model: This position requires the employee to work a 5-day-a-week schedule in the office.
  • Travel: This role involves up to 15% travel, both domestically and internationally. Depending on project requirements, travel to supplier locations, as well as other Caterpillar facilities may be necessary.
  • Relocation: Domestic relocation will be available to those who qualify.

Summary Pay Range:

$112,710.00 - $169,060.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
