The posting

About the Opportunity

We are partnering with an established and respected construction services company in Lanham, Maryland, to find an experienced Construction Billing & Collections Specialist to join its accounting team.

This position is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional with a strong background in construction billing, accounts receivable, and collections. The successful candidate will manage the billing process from invoice preparation through payment collection while working closely with project managers and accounting leadership.

We're looking for someone who understands the complexities of construction billing, including progress billings, AIA billing formats, retainage, lien waivers, and customer payment requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Construction Billing & Accounts Receivable

  • Prepare and submit monthly construction progress billings and customer invoices.
  • Manage schedules of values, change orders, retainage, and percentage-of-completion updates.
  • Prepare and process AIA-style billing documents and continuation sheets.
  • Maintain accurate billing records, contract values, and project financial information.
  • Submit invoices through construction billing platforms, including Textura, Procore, Coupa, Ariba, and other customer portals.
  • Track invoice approvals, payment status, outstanding balances, and retainage releases.
  • Maintain an organized billing calendar to ensure monthly deadlines are consistently met.
  • Collaborate with project managers to resolve billing discrepancies and obtain required documentation.

Collections & Payment Management

  • Monitor accounts receivable aging reports and proactively follow up on outstanding invoices.
  • Contact customers regarding overdue payments through phone, email, and written correspondence.
  • Negotiate payment arrangements while maintaining positive customer relationships.
  • Identify and resolve payment disputes, billing discrepancies, and outstanding account issues.
  • Prepare and manage lien waivers, conditional and unconditional releases, and other compliance documentation.
  • Support compliance with applicable construction lien and bond requirements.
  • Maintain detailed records of collection activities and customer communications.
  • Prepare regular collections reports and assist with cash flow forecasting.

Accounting Systems & Reporting

  • Enter and maintain accurate billing and accounts receivable information in accounting systems.
  • Utilize Sage Intacct, Sirius, or similar construction accounting software.
  • Assist with month-end closing, billing reconciliations, and revenue reporting.
  • Work closely with the Controller and accounting team to improve billing accuracy and collections efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline billing processes and strengthen accounts receivable management.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 2–5 years of experience in construction billing, project accounting, accounts receivable, or a related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of construction progress billing, including AIA billing formats and continuation sheets.
  • Experience with accounts receivable collections and customer payment follow-up.
  • Understanding of schedules of values, change orders, retainage, and lien waivers.
  • Experience using construction billing portals such as Textura, Procore, Coupa, GCPay, or similar platforms.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills, including SUMIFS, XLOOKUP, and spreadsheet reconciliation.
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • 3+ years of collections experience within construction, subcontracting, or equipment rental.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct, Sirius, or comparable construction accounting systems.
  • Familiarity with construction contracts, lien rights, and payment compliance requirements.
  • Experience working directly with project managers, general contractors, and subcontractors.

What Makes This Opportunity Attractive

  • Competitive annual salary of $72,000–$85,000, depending on experience.
  • Opportunity to join an established company in the construction industry.
  • Work directly with accounting leadership and project management teams.
  • Stable, full-time position with meaningful responsibilities.
  • Opportunity to contribute to process improvements and financial operations.
  • Convenient Lanham, Maryland location.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced construction billing professional who understands that construction accounts receivable is more than simply sending invoices.

You know how to manage progress billings, track retainage, navigate customer billing portals, and follow up on outstanding payments. You're comfortable communicating with project managers and customers, resolving billing issues, and keeping multiple projects organized.

Most importantly, you're proactive, detail-oriented, and confident managing both the billing and collections sides of the accounting process.

If you have construction billing and collections experience and are looking for your next opportunity, we'd love to hear from you.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
