This role is a hybrid work arrangement. Work schedule to be discussed with Hiring Manager according to the guidelines defined by the department.

CBC News is looking for an experienced senior producer to support a new local video initiative designed to transform how Canadians discover and understand the news stories shaping their communities.

This role will support the creation and growth of a new explainer video format that brings together local journalism, audience-first storytelling, and digital video innovation. Working with newsrooms across the country, you will identify compelling local stories, guide the prioritization of resources, coach producers and journalists, and safeguard the editorial standards, workflows and creative vision for a new storytelling format.

This is a 1-year temporary position that can be based anywhere with access to a CBC Station.

As CBC News continues to prioritize mobile and streaming storytelling, you will help shape local journalism designed to reach new audiences. You are fluent in the constantly evolving best practices in digital content, with publishing experience and knowledge on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and podcasts. You understand what audiences are curious about, how they discover information, and you have experience interpreting and applying audience research and data.

You are an editorial leader who knows how to build highly engaging explanatory journalism that earns trust and reaches new Canadians. You have strong ties to local and network newsrooms, ideally with recent experience within local teams. You have some experience in managing change and difficult conversations within teams.

Working closely with local newsroom leaders, you will champion editorial excellence, audience-first storytelling and innovation while ensuring all work reflects CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices. You will also foster an inclusive, collaborative culture that encourages experimentation, creativity and continuous learning.

This role reports to the Executive Producer of Local Video Development, within the CBC News Content development team. Working from within the development team, you are a mentor at heart, with a deep commitment to adult learning, team culture, and audience growth techniques. You have some experience working with other CBC departments. You live and promote the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Protect and promote the editorial vision and ongoing development of a new local video initiative.
  • Identify opportunities for local stories with national relevance and help shape editorial priorities.
  • Ensure editorial standards, production workflows and creative best practices are being met across participating teams.
  • Provide editorial feedback throughout story development, scripting, production and post-production.
  • Work closely with local newsroom leaders to support successful implementation in participating markets.
  • Clearly communication about ongoing project needs and progress within the team, and to key leaders within the News division.
  • Recommend and participate in the delivery of training, workshops and editorial resources that strengthen storytelling across the network.
  • Ensure stories are optimized for YouTube, CBC News digital platforms, streaming, and social media.
  • Collaborate with Audience Growth leaders to incorporate audience insights into editorial planning and story selection.
  • Monitor audience performance and identify opportunities to improve storytelling, packaging and discoverability.
  • Experiment with new video formats, visual storytelling techniques and platform-specific approaches.
  • Work closely with graphics, design and marketing teams to strengthen the visual identity of the initiative.
  • Foster collaboration between participating newsrooms, encouraging the sharing of ideas, formats and best practices.
  • Make editorial decisions that reflect CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Support production planning, resource allocation and long-term growth of the initiative.

Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum seven years of recent leadership experience of which three must be in broadcasting or a closely related industry.
  • Strong editorial judgment and deep understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • A keen interest and ongoing expertise in news and current events.
  • Proven ability to coach and develop journalists, producers and on-screen talent.
  • Experience working collaboratively across multiple newsrooms or editorial teams.
  • Strong understanding of YouTube, social video and mobile storytelling, including audience behaviour and platform best practices.
  • Experience developing visual-first journalism that explains complex topics clearly and engagingly.
  • Ability to identify stories that resonate with local communities while appealing to broader audiences.
  • Experience using audience analytics to inform editorial decisions and improve performance.
  • An ability to work effectively to multiple deadlines along with excellent organizational skills, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Comfortable leading through change and building new editorial workflows.
  • Strong collaborative approach with the ability to build trust across diverse teams and regions.
  • Curiosity about emerging storytelling formats, audience trends and digital innovation.
  • Experience managing creative projects from concept through execution.
  • Multiplatform production experience is an asset.
  • University degree or equivalent experience.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
