The posting

We exist for workers and their employers -- who are the backbone of our economy. That is where Centivo comes in -- our mission is to bring affordable, high-quality healthcare to the millions who struggle to pay their healthcare bills.

Summary of role:

We are looking for a Law Clerk to support our legal team while we recruit for an Associate General Counsel. Our Law Clerk hire will work within the legal team to assist with researching and concisely summarizing evolving areas of the regulatory framework for self-funded third-party medical benefits administration. This is an excellent opportunity for 3L law student to gain hands-on experience working with a small in-house legal team (one a UB Law grad). You will be part of the legal team and have a chance to work within a contract management system and workflow improvements, engage with outside counsel if additional expertise is needed and work cross-functionally with the business. You will gain exposure to the Buffalo start up community and the chance to work with an experienced team of benefits and health tech leaders. The role is open immediately and is expected to be needed until the full time role is hired and onboarded, although there is the potential to continue for the Spring semester as well.

Responsibilities Include:

- Researching areas of health plan and third-party administrator compliance issues, with a significant focus in ERISA, Affordable Care Act, Consolidated Appropriations Act, MHPAEA and other federal laws and regulations

- Crafting clear, concise white papers and guidance documents – both for the legal department, as well as business audiences

- Prioritizing work relative to risk, importance and leveraging time management skills to complete tasks on a timely basis

- Interacting with cross-functional business departments to assist with project management of the operational implications of gaining compliance in evolving areas of the regulatory environment

- Developing a compliance library on key topics

- Assisting with reviewing, redlining commercial contracts at a national organization experiencing rapid growth

- Documenting and improving processes, including how to use system integrations and AI to build efficiencies.

Qualifications:

Required Skills and Abilities:

- Ability to prioritize and organize own work to meet deadlines

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to speak clearly and concisely, conveying complex or technical information in a manner that others can understand, as well as ability to understand and interpret complex information

- Strong interpersonal skills, establishing rapport and working well with others

- Advanced Microsoft Suite skills

Education and Experience:

- 3rd yr law student

- Interest in health care, health benefits, start-ups required, with a preference for some related experience and a substantial interest in gaining in-house experience

- Strong, clear research and writing skills.

Work Location:

- An ideal candidate would be a University at Buffalo Law student who would work from the Buffalo Office with flexibility for some work from home,

- While we believe that working in the Buffalo office would provide a better learning experience, we may consider remote candidates with a connection to Buffalo.

Skills & Behaviors:

- Communication - Strong, proven verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex or technical information in a manner that non-lawyers can understand and understand business objectives and translate into legal and regulatory requirements

- Strategic Thinking – Knack for sorting through clutter to find the best route, often by pulling up from the current complexity to identify patterns that guide future direction and allow one to narrow the options and articulate the options from which others can work backward.

- Business Acumen – A keenness and quickness in understanding and dealing with a business situation (risks and opportunities) in a manner that is likely to lead to a good outcome. Critical to this is an ability to think beyond their own function.

- Systems/Analytical Thinking – Demonstrates the ability to think fluidly and integrate information. Able to anticipate non-linear and non-obvious relationships. Often includes an ability to think holistically/conceptually – very powerful when accompanied by ability to communicate & clarify tactically.

- Flexibility/Working through Ambiguity – Tendency to be energized by new experiences/perspectives that test assumptions and thinking. Considers different points of view, sometimes with fragmented information, to arrive at practical, effective, actionable next steps.

Centivo Values:

- Resilient – This is wicked hard. There is no easy button for healthcare affordability. Luckily, the mission makes it worth it and sustains us when things are tough. Being resilient ensures we don’t give up.

- Uncommon - The status quo stinks so we had to go out and build something better. We know the healthcare system. It isn't working for members, employers, and providers. So we're building it from scratch, from the ground up. Our focus is on making things better for them while also improving clinical results - which is bold and uncommon.

- Positive – We care about each other. It takes energy to do hard stuff, build something better and to be resilient and unconventional while doing it. Because of that, we make sure we give kudos freely and feedback with care. When our tank gets low, a team member is there to be a source of new energy. We celebrate together. We are supportive, generous, humble, and positive.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
