SUMMARY

This position supports the Crime Analysis Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, a unit responsible for continually leveraging technology and employing a set of systematic, analytical processes to provide timely, targeted information to drive decision making. The I&T Data Services Analyst designs, develops, and maintains the back-end logic, data workflows, reports, and application support processes that serve CMPD’s Crime Analysis and Data Analytics Division. The position bridges data engineering and data analytics by improving how data is extracted, transformed, validated, stored, reported, and used for operational decision support. Work includes developing ETL pipelines, supporting API integrations, maintaining relational databases and reporting environments, modernizing legacy reporting processes, and documenting technical workflows. Assignments require strong knowledge of CMPD data sources, relational database architecture, SQL Server and Oracle environments, Python, SSIS, SSRS, and secure data exchange practices.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, improve, and maintain data workflows that move information between CMPD systems, vendor systems, and reporting environments.
  • Build and support ETL processes using tools such as Python, SQL, PL/SQL, T-SQL, and SSIS so data can be extracted, transformed, loaded, validated, and used reliably.
  • Create and maintain secure data integrations, including API-based exchanges using REST, JSON, XML, and related authentication methods for internal and external data partners.
  • Support database design and maintenance by reviewing table relationships, creating or updating stored procedures, documenting data structures, and helping maintain reporting data sources.
  • Improve database and workflow performance by troubleshooting failed jobs, resolving integration issues, tuning queries, reviewing server or process logs, and correcting source-to-report data problems.
  • Apply data quality, data governance, metadata, and business rule concepts so reports and applications use consistent, accurate, and secure information.
  • Develop, maintain, and automate SSRS reports, recurring subscriptions, and other reporting products used by analysts, supervisors, and division leadership.
  • Review existing report libraries and reporting processes to identify outdated, duplicative, or inefficient products and recommend updates that improve accuracy, performance, and usability.
  • Modernize manual or legacy reporting processes, including Microsoft Access-based reports, by moving appropriate work into more sustainable web-based or server-based reporting solutions.
  • Work with end users to clarify reporting needs, translate business rules into SQL logic, test report output, and explain results or report changes in a way that non-technical users can understand.
  • Support existing Crime Analysis and Data Analytics web applications by maintaining back-end code, database connections, and application logic.
  • Enhance and maintain on-demand web applications using C#, ASP.NET, and related .NET technologies, along with automated reporting solutions using Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
  • Use version control and development tracking tools such as Git, TFS, or similar systems to coordinate changes and document work.
  • Work with developers, DBAs, analysts, supervisors, and external partners to align technical solutions with business needs and data standards.
  • Document workflows, code changes, report logic, integration steps, database jobs, and support procedures so systems can be maintained and knowledge can be shared across the team.
  • Participate in ongoing learning related to programming, data engineering, application support, cloud technologies, and other tools that may improve system performance and service delivery.

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
