The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer – Storybook based in Netherlands.

Join a team building and maintaining one of the web development ecosystem’s leading tools for creating, testing, and documenting user interface components. In this senior engineering role, you will contribute directly to the evolution of Storybook, shaping APIs and developer experiences used by frontend teams worldwide. You will help advance AI-powered development workflows, enabling AI agents to build, test, and refine user interfaces more effectively. Working in an open-source-oriented environment, you will collaborate with maintainers, contributors, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver impactful improvements. The team values thoughtful technical decisions, open collaboration, empathy, and continuous learning. This is a fully remote opportunity with core collaboration hours aligned to Central European Time, including a 09:00–15:00 UTC overlap.

Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the Storybook codebase as a core maintainer, helping shape the direction, quality, and long-term sustainability of the platform.
  • Design, develop, and refine APIs that serve end users, addon authors, and other core maintainers, with a strong focus on usability and developer experience.
  • Participate in open-source collaboration by triaging issues, reviewing pull requests, supporting contributors, and writing or reviewing Request for Comments (RFCs).
  • Understand developers’ workflows and challenges, creating or reviewing educational content that helps users adopt new features and get the most out of the platform.
  • Engage with the broader developer community to exchange ideas, communicate technical decisions, and share product developments, with opportunities to speak at conferences if interested.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to maintain feature consistency and continuity across the open-source platform and related products.
  • Contribute to the engineering support rotation, which primarily operates during regular business hours.
  • Help advance AI-driven development workflows, including tools and integrations that enable AI agents to reuse components, preview interfaces, run tests, and identify potential issues.
  • Contribute to the ongoing expansion of frontend ecosystem support, helping ensure the platform works effectively across modern frameworks and development environments.
  • At least 5 years of experience building web applications or developer-facing software using JavaScript, TypeScript, or other relevant programming languages.
  • Experience developing tools, frameworks, libraries, or internal platforms for other developers.
  • A strong understanding of the underlying systems that power modern frontend development, including web frameworks, build tools, and the broader frontend toolchain.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate effectively in an asynchronous, distributed team.
  • An interest in engaging with developer communities, understanding their needs, exchanging ideas, and sharing technical knowledge.
  • The ability to form independent technical opinions, clearly explain reasoning, and remain open to alternative perspectives and new evidence.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for improving developer productivity and helping shape the future of frontend development.
  • Prior open-source maintainer experience is not required.
  • Additional strengths include sharing knowledge through talks, articles, videos, or other public channels; expertise in frontend technologies beyond React, such as Web Components, Angular, or React Native; and a clear perspective on developer experience across different ecosystems.
  • Experience experimenting with AI agents and agentic development workflows, or familiarity with Storybook or Chromatic, is an advantage.
  • Experience working effectively in a distributed, remote-first environment is beneficial, as is a non-traditional path into software engineering that brings additional perspectives and insights.
  • Annual salary range of US$161,900–$197,700, plus equity, as stated in the original posting. The applicable compensation structure and currency for candidates based in Germany should be confirmed during recruitment.
  • Fully remote working arrangement within Europe.
  • Core collaboration hours aligned with Central European Time, with a specified 09:00–15:00 UTC overlap.
  • The opportunity to contribute to a widely used open-source developer tool and influence frontend development practices across a global community.
  • A collaborative engineering environment that emphasizes kindness, empathy, thoughtful communication, and continuous learning.
  • Opportunities to participate in developer community activities and speak at conferences.
  • Additional benefits are available, but the specific details are not itemized in the job description and should be confirmed during the hiring process.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
