CIBC’s Summer Internship Program provides students with a hands-on opportunity to complement their academic experience while building practical skills and exploring a career in financial services. Throughout the summer, interns will have opportunities to learn from experienced investment professionals, connect with leaders across the organization, network with fellow interns, and participate in professional development and community activities.

As an Equity Research Intern you will work alongside experienced investment professionals and gain direct exposure to the fundamental research and investment process. You will develop analytical, financial modeling, and communication skills while researching publicly traded companies and learning how investors evaluate businesses, industries, competitive positioning, financial performance, valuation, and investment opportunities.

CIBC’s Summer Internship Program runs for approximately 10 weeks from June through August. During the program, you will have access to training, mentorship, and support from members of the investment team. Our goal is to provide a challenging, collaborative, and rewarding experience that gives you meaningful exposure to a career in investment research.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Working 40 hours per week in our Chicago office alongside experienced equity research and investment professionals.
  • Learning the fundamentals of equity research, security analysis, valuation, and portfolio management.
  • Conducting fundamental research on publicly traded companies using SEC filings, earnings materials, company presentations, sell-side research, industry publications, and other relevant sources.
  • Building and maintaining financial models to analyze company performance, earnings, valuation, and key investment drivers.
  • Developing a detailed investment thesis on one or more public companies and presenting your research and conclusions to members of the investment team.
  • Learning the industries and companies covered by your host analyst, including key competitors, industry dynamics, and business and financial drivers.
  • Listening to and analyzing company earnings calls, investor presentations, and other corporate events and summarizing key investment takeaways.
  • Learning to use FactSet and other research resources to support fundamental investment analysis.
  • Participating in weekly learning sessions covering investment research, financial markets, portfolio management, and careers in financial services.
  • Participating, when available, in meetings with public-company executives, investor relations teams, sell-side research analysts, and other investment professionals.

Who You Are

  • You have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2.
  • You have a demonstrated interest in equity research, investing, or financial markets through investment clubs, coursework, internships, personal investing, stock pitches, or independent learning.
  • You are pursuing a bachelor’s degree, preferably in finance, accounting, economics, business, or another relevant field, with an expected graduation date December 2027 or June 2028
  • You have a foundational understanding of financial statements, accounting, corporate finance, and/or valuation.
  • You are proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • To be eligible for this position, you must be authorized to work in the U.S.

How You’ll Succeed

  • You’re intellectually curious. You enjoy digging into businesses, industries, financial statements, and market developments to understand what drives company performance and investment outcomes.
  • You give meaning to data. You can analyze financial and qualitative information, identify what matters, and communicate your conclusions clearly and concisely.
  • You understand that the details matter. You approach research carefully, challenge assumptions, and use critical thinking to develop well-supported conclusions.
  • You take ownership. You are proactive, dependable, and willing to take responsibility for assignments while asking questions when additional context is needed.
  • You communicate effectively. You can translate detailed research into a clear investment thesis and confidently discuss the reasoning behind your conclusions.
  • You’re driven by collective success. You value collaboration, seek feedback, and understand that strong investment decisions benefit from diverse perspectives and constructive debate.
  • Values matter to you. You bring your authentic self to work and demonstrate CIBC’s values of trust, teamwork, and accountability.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
