Performs complex duties involving the installation, construction, inspecting and maintaining all manner of Independence Power & Light substations. Under general supervision incumbent will carry out assignments and may also be assigned to supervise apprentices. Duties include installation of new equipment, making inspections and diagnosing trouble with a variety of equipment including power transformers, oil circuit breakers, vacuum circuit breakers, air circuit breakers, disconnect switches, lightning arrestors, voltage regulators, control apparatus, batteries, and chargers. Responsibilities include performing cable integrity tests as well as location. May have contact with employees and the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged or presented. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Status as a Journeyman Lineman or four (4) years of substation experience. Valid driver’s license. Requires knowledge of basic electricity, schematics and wiring diagrams, substation equipment and basic mechanics. Requires skill in connecting and reading electrical meters and devices, operation of aerial devices, and effective interpersonal communication. Must complete NIMS training within first six months of hire. Physical Demands: Ability to climb poles and navigate all types of terrain. Ability to bend and lift equipment, tools, etc. weighing up to 100 lbs. Hand dexterity to operate job related equipment. Typical Working Conditions: Exposure to outdoor conditions of extreme heat and cold. Exposure to insulating oils, dust, chemicals, storage batteries and electromagnetic fields. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. This position is open to IBEW-Power and Light Bargaining Unit Members only. Under the provisions of the IBEW Work Agreement, this is a bid job classification. Position open until filled.
