The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) seeks to eliminate inequities resulting in premature mortality. With an unwavering grounding in history and structural analysis, CHECW works to increase visibility of socially unjust policy while pushing towards redress for the most impacted NYC communities. CHECW addresses inequity across community and healthcare systems in partnership with community, faith-based, and health care organizations. CHECW's work focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial determinants, and addresses both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well-being of New Yorkers. CHECW is comprised of the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, the Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building, the Bureau of Equitable Health Systems and the Bureau of Finance, Administration and Services. The Division's Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Equity Officer and oversees Race to Justice, the Agency's internal reform effort to help our staff learn what they can do to better address racial health gaps and improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers. The division's Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Medical Officer. The Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood works with clinical and community partners to expand access to high-quality, culturally responsive programs that prevent and manage chronic diseases, especially for residents facing the greatest health challenges. The Bureau provides public health and social services, coordinates community events, builds collaborative partnerships, and leads research and evaluation initiatives that drive evidence-based action, close health gaps and advance equity across the Bronx. From diabetes and asthma education to nutrition, food security, newborn safety, and childbirth classes, the Bureau empowers New Yorkers with the knowledge and tools to live healthier lives.
The Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health seeks to hire a Community Engagement Manager for the Community Engagement and Capacity Building unit to establish and maintain effective relationships with key local organizations and community partners.
Job Duties and Responsibilities: - Assist the Director of Community Engagement and Capacity Building to establish and maintain effective relationships with key local organizations and community partners to identify and address the health needs of underserved communities. - Assist the Director of Community Engagement and Capacity Building to assess local partnerships and provide technical assistance for development and/or partnership enhancement. - Assist the Director of Community Engagement and Capacity Building to manage and coordinate emergency response activities. - Conduct literature reviews to identify community engagement strategies and healthy living programs for implementation - Design, plan, and implement programs that promote healthy living practices throughout the community. - Supervise the collection of data from community engagement efforts and healthy living programs - In collaboration with the Research and Evaluation team, design surveys, collect data, and conduct analysis to evaluate community engagement efforts. - Coordinate with the Research and Evaluation team on research activities related to community engagement and healthy living programs - Maintain records and prepares reports - Manage, plan, implement and conduct outreach and engagement efforts with community residents and partners. - Oversee the Bureau’s participation and staffing for community events such as health fairs, tabling events, meetings, trainings, and other community activities to ensure appropriate representation and engagement activities. - Manage and coordinate front desk navigation services and staffing - Manage and coordinate special projects for the Community Engagement and Capacity Building unit, including community awareness campaigns. - Support the development of Bureau Bronx Neighborhood Health outreach materials, including coordinating with Bureau and CHECW communications team and providing input on materials. - Manage ongoing communication with community partners, local leaders, and groups to explain Bureau Bronx Neighborhood Health programs and initiatives. - Represent the Agency at external meetings with community partners and support local coalitions, partnerships, and network building. Occasionally attend community events during the evening and on weekends. - Attend and deliver presentations and updates at internal and external community meetings and events. - Supervise and train staff and interns to ensure effective community engagement. - Manage community engagement data collection and generate program performance reports and summaries for updates. - Participate in public health emergency response as needed and support the agency in community engagement during an emergency - Other duties as assigned by the Director and Assistant Commissioner
Preferred Skills: - Commitment to social justice and equity. - Experience working in low-income communities desired; comfortable working in a community setting with diverse populations. - Excellent skills in presentation and written and oral communication. - Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, tasks, and timelines. - Existing knowledge of Bronx community stakeholders. - Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and excellent customer-service skills. - Bilingual/Spanish speaking candidates strongly encouraged to apply. - Experience working in applied public health programs. - Experience working with community members and organizations. - Proven track record of applying an equity lens to processes, planning and policies. - Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities. - At least 1 year of program oversight experience, particularly related to chronic disease. - Experience collaborating with community partners. - Data collection, research and evaluation skills - Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Qualifications
1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health. To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have: 1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or 2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or 3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.
