Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35B, and another $13.6B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan. The projects BEDC implements allows DEP as a whole to continue to operate and maintain an exemplary water supply system.

BEDC In-House Design (IHD) directorate provides design and engineering services to meet operations’ needs in a manner consistent with BEDC’s core values of safety, schedule, quality, and customer service. IHD supports projects from the business case through preliminary design, design, procurement construction, and finally with the turnover to operations. The directorate includes two divisions: Design Services and Engineering Services.

IHD’s Design Services includes the Architectural, Site Civil, Structural, Process Mechanical/HVAC, Tunnel Mechanical, and Electrical discipline sections. Each design section prepares design and construction documents including engineering plans and specifications for the construction of water supply, sewer, and wastewater treatment infrastructure. They also provide design services during construction. IHD projects are typically of the highest priority for the Agency. The projects worked on are some of the largest public work contracts administered by the City. They are vital to the health and welfare of the citizens of New York and allow the designers to leave a lasting legacy by creating facilities that will be utilized for generations to come.

IHD’s Engineering Services includes the Quality Assurance, Quality Assurance Lab, Specifications/Standard Operating Procedures, Sustainability, and BIM/CADD sections. The Engineering Services division focuses on sustainability, resiliency, laboratory material testing, quality reviews and inspections, standardization of documents, project delivery standards and uses current BIM/CADD technology to streamline engineering design processes. The division defines and maintains standards for project management, project delivery, contract specifications and sustainability within BEDC in order to deliver the best and most efficient version of a capital project. The Quality Assurance Section implements the bureau’s quality assurance program. The program ensures that all construction and engineering projects meet established quality standards for safety, performance, and regulatory compliance. This includes developing and enforcing manufacturing criteria, defining and overseeing equipment testing procedures, and conducting both shop-level and field-level verification of materials and installations.

BEDC seeks to hire an Environmental Engineering Intern to support the Process Mechanical/HVAC section, located in our Lefrak Office in Queens, NY. The Process Mechanical section is responsible for creating sustainable mechanical engineering designs for capital improvement projects that, in conjunction with other engineering disciplines, develop and shape DEP’s public infrastructure, and assist in the continued operation and maintenance of exemplary wastewater pumping and treatment systems to protect New York City’s public environment.

In the Process Mechanical/HVAC section, the selected candidate, under supervision of a lead design or mechanical engineer, will assist in performing process mechanical engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility in the delivery of capital projects through the design phase with the preparation of engineering documents for process mechanical, HVAC, plumbing equipment needed within wastewater collection and treatment systems infrastructure and other miscellaneous facilities. The selected candidate may also assist in the construction phase of projects. Duties of the selected candidate may include, but are not limited to, assisting with preparation of contract drawings & specifications, design calculations and estimates for process mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing systems equipment such as large valves, piping, pumps, blowers, engines, hoists, fans, heat pumps, etc., and in developing and conducting field and shop testing of equipment as needed. The selected candidate may also engage in research, investigation, studies, or examinations related to the engineering functions such as operations, maintenance, repair and alterations of the wastewater collection and treatment systems. Additional duties of the selected candidate may include assistance in reviewing construction plans and may participate in the inspection of the mechanical system for the construction, demolition, or alteration to comply with the provisions of law, rules or regulations.

**** Only those applicants with permanent Civil Service status as an Environmental Engineering Intern or who have taken the DCAS Civil Service Exam # 6117, are eligible to apply to this JVN. If you do not have permanent civil service status as an Environmental Engineering Intern, or have taken the DCAS Civil Service Exam # 6117, please do not apply to this position as you will not be considered for an interview. ****

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
