The posting

Senior Ecologist

Location: Birmingham (Hybrid working)

Salary: £38,000 – £47,000 + 4-day working week (full pay)

An established environmental consultancy is seeking a Senior Ecologist to join its growing ecology team in Birmingham. This is an opportunity to play a leading role in delivering high-quality ecological work across planning, infrastructure and nature recovery projects, within a collaborative and people-focused environment.

The organisation is known for its progressive approach, strong technical standards and commitment to sustainable working practices. Senior ecologists are trusted to lead, influence and apply professional judgement, rather than simply deliver to process.

The Role

You will take a key role in leading ecological projects, managing client relationships and supporting the development of the wider ecology team. The position offers a varied workload and the opportunity to work closely with other environmental disciplines.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Project management and client liaison
  • Delivery of Preliminary Ecology Appraisals and Ecological Impact Assessments
  • Habitats Regulations Assessments
  • Biodiversity Net Gain assessments
  • Protected species surveys, reporting and licensing support
  • Design of mitigation and enhancement strategies
  • Scoping, planning and leading ecological surveys
  • Mentoring and supporting consultants and assistants
  • Contributing to business development and securing new work

About You

  • Degree (or higher) in ecology, biological sciences or a related discipline
  • Strong understanding of UK ecological legislation and planning policy
  • Excellent survey skills, including UK Habitat Classification and specialist species surveys
  • Experience liaising with clients, statutory bodies and local planning authorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage projects, budgets and deadlines
  • A collaborative, values-led approach to working
  • Full UK driving licence

Whats on Offer

  • 4-day working week on full pay
  • Hybrid working model (typically 2 days per week in the office, including site days)
  • Supportive, low-ego working culture with real autonomy at senior level
  • Progression to Principal level

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
