Your role at Clorox:

The Senior Scientist is a key scientific leader within Product Safety & Regulatory Affairs, responsible for shaping and advancing product safety strategies across Clorox's cleaning portfolio and selected adjacent businesses. This role combines deep scientific expertise with strategic influence to ensure products meet evolving safety, environmental, and regulatory expectations globally.

The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to R&D, Regulatory, Quality, Legal, and Business teams, driving proactive risk assessment, regulatory readiness, and science-based decision making throughout the product lifecycle. In addition to providing technical leadership, the individual will have opportunities to lead complex cross-functional initiatives and build capabilities that support the future growth of the Product Safety organization.

Hybrid - 3 days in office; 2 days remote per week. Can be based out of Pleasanton, CA or Durham, NC

In this role, you will:

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategic product safety programs that are aligned with current scientific understanding, evolving regulatory expectations, and business objectives.
  • Provide scientific leadership and guidance to cross-functional teams throughout the product lifecycle, from innovation and development through commercialization and post-market stewardship.
  • Serve as the primary safety and toxicology expert for assigned product categories, translating complex scientific and regulatory information into actionable business recommendations.
  • Lead safety assessments, risk characterization activities, and issue management initiatives in our cleaning business to ensure product compliance and consumer trust.
  • Anticipate and assess emerging global regulatory, toxicological, environmental, and chemical sustainability trends, translating insights into proactive business strategies.
  • Partner closely with Product Development, Regulatory Affairs, Quality, Supply Chain, Legal, and Marketing teams to integrate safety considerations into key business decisions.
  • Influence internal policies, standards, and governance processes that support product stewardship excellence and consistency across the organization.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including trade associations, scientific organizations, regulators, and industry working groups.
  • Lead or contribute to strategic initiatives that enhance Product Safety processes, predictive capabilities, and operational effectiveness.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts that modernize safety assessment approaches, risk management frameworks, and scientific decision-making tools.
  • Participate in external engagement opportunities to influence global activities through trade associations, industry groups or relevant initiatives.

What we look for:

Years and type of experience

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in toxicology or a related discipline
  • Experience supporting consumer products, chemicals, household products, personal care products, or other regulated industries such as Agricultural Chemistry or Pharma.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex scientific projects to develop data for registration with a Regulatory Agency such as EPA or FDA.
  • Influencing business decisions across cross-functional organizations
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agencies, industry groups, or external scientific organizations is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated leadership of teams, projects, or organizational initiatives is strongly valued
  • Experience with International regulatory & safety frameworks will be highly valued

Skills and abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically while maintaining scientific rigor and attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence decisions and build alignment across diverse stakeholders.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Proven capability to translate complex scientific and regulatory concepts into clear business implications and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize digital tools, scientific informatics platforms, data analytics, and emerging technologies to enhance product safety assessments, regulatory decision-making, and organizational effectiveness. Experience with AI-enabled tools, predictive toxicology approaches, or enterprise product stewardship systems is highly desirable.
  • Ability to lead through influence in matrixed organizations and navigate ambiguity effectively.
  • Strong project leadership skills with a track record of delivering results across multiple priorities.
  • Travel may be required; approximately 5-10%

Your starting pay will depend on job-related factors, including relevant skills, knowledge, experience and location. The applicable salary range for every role in the U.S. is based on your work location and is aligned to one of three zones according to the cost of labor in your area.

–Zone A: $109,400 - $210,000

–Zone B: $100,300 - $192,500

–Zone C: $91,200 - $175,000

This job is also eligible for participation in Clorox’s incentive plans, subject to the terms of the applicable plan documents and policies.
