The posting

Carnegie Mellon University's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences is searching for a Social Media Specialist to join its team. The Social Media Specialist is responsible for using social media and multimedia tools to tell the college’s many and wide-ranging stories with an authentic, on-brand voice while aligning with university’s mission. This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a team working to shape the digital presence of Dietrich College, engage with a wide variety of audiences and connect with future Dietrich College students.

The successful candidate is someone who can thrive in a fast-paced environment, multitask and meet deadlines. You’re someone who is passionate about understanding audience needs and preferences, coming up with ideas and bringing those ideas to life in innovative ways.

This dynamic role requires flexibility. Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary. On a daily basis, some tasks could include capturing media content (photo/video), designing graphics, conducting interviews and participating in brainstorming meetings.

The Social Media Specialist reports to Dietrich College’s Associate Dean for Communications.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Plan and develop content plans for social media that align with college- and university-wide marketing and communications strategy.
  • Coordinate a wide range of multimedia projects — including photos and video — from planning through execution. Multiple projects may be concurrent.
  • Conceptualize, write, edit and proofread individual posts and stories, including producing appropriate visuals, in a compelling storytelling fashion for social media.
  • Collect and analyze data to measure the effectiveness of campaigns; make recommendations to refine and advance strategies to engage target audiences.
  • Remain up-to-date on emerging platforms, trends and tools; provide consultation and make recommendations to enhance audience engagement.
  • Hire and supervise student workers, as needed.

Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

You should demonstrate:

  • Proficiency across social media platforms including LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook.
  • Proficiency in graphic design using either Canva and/or Adobe products.
  • High levels of creativity in taking photos and producing video content for social media.
  • Strong understanding of the user experience and commitment to following best practices regarding digital accessibility.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member; able to reach consensus and achieve team goals; provide and accept feedback; and freely share information and knowledge with the team.
  • Demonstrate the highest level of integrity while promoting CMU’s mission and values.
  • Ability to quickly assimilate new knowledge and appropriately apply it on the job.
  • Ability to make sound decisions with minimal supervision.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, writing, graphic design or related fields.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in social media, marketing, communications, content creation and/or a related field.

Requirements:

  • Successful pre-employment background check

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
