Summary
The Sales Manager is a player-coach who carries a personal book of accounts and sales target while leading a team of Associate Account Managers, Account Managers and Senior Account Managers in a specialty or division. This person owns the team's sales targets, account coverage, intake and routing discipline, and the Account Manager bench.
A Sales Manager is ready for Director of Sales when they run multiple teams as a business and build leaders, rather than carrying a book.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Business Development & Sales Execution
- Carry a personal book of accounts and sales target alongside the team target.
- Build the team sales plan, assign accounts, territories and targets, and coach qualification.
- Carry your own deals through the full lifecycle and keep the team on one lifecycle, stepping in where deals stall.
- Review HubSpot hygiene weekly, audit records against the minimum viable record standard and correct them with the owner.
- Follow the rules of engagement on your own deals. Settle account conflicts within the team and approve joint pursuits and splits before the proposal.
- Consolidate what the team is hearing and act on it. Spread what works across the team, get missing tools and collateral built, and bring market feedback into offering and capacity decisions.
- Build the company's presence in the team's customer and industry community, and develop partner relationships across the team's territory.
Client Relationship Management
- Own the relationship on your key accounts and back the team in escalations. Model the advisory conversation and raise the standard across the team.
- Make sure every incoming request has a named owner within one business day. Monitor activity levels across the team and correct gaps.
- Decide routing where ownership is unclear and keep intake moving. Monitor open-item aging across the team, clear what is stuck, and enforce record standards.
- Grow your own accounts and set growth targets by account for the team, reviewing penetration with each Account Manager. Track pull-through and make the hand-off to construction routine.
- Close out escalations an Account Manager cannot resolve.
Proposals, Pricing & Negotiation
- Scope and price your own pursuits.
- Review scopes, estimates and pricing for margin and risk before submission on significant team pursuits, and coordinate team capacity with operations and the Nerve Center.
- Write and submit proposals on your own pursuits. Review proposals on significant team pursuits, raise the standard of what goes out, and present the offering to key accounts alongside the Account Manager.
- Negotiate your own contracts and approve terms within delegated authority. Support the team in negotiation.
- Close out your own deals accurately and on time and verify the team does the same.
- Roll up and defend the team forecast and monitor unbilled and aged items.
- Keep the team current on codes, standards and offerings, and make sure the team meets training and site safety requirements.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead the team of Associate Account Managers, Account Managers and Senior Account Managers. Set priorities, coverage, expectations and individual targets, run one-on-ones, and manage performance, while protecting coaching time alongside your own selling.
- Coach Account Managers on pipeline, qualification and closing by working live deals alongside them. Ride along and debrief.
- Recruit, interview and onboard Associate Account Managers, Account Managers and Senior Account Managers.
- Build a team culture of discipline, responsiveness and shared intel.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years in service or capital construction and modular sales, including 2+ years leading a sales or service team.
- Proven record of personally closing business, growing a book of accounts and developing salespeople.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Experience in mission-critical or data center environments preferred.
- Experience running pipeline and forecast reviews in HubSpot or a comparable CRM preferred.
Success Factors and Company Values
- Professionalism: Sets the professional standard for the team.
- Exceeding Expectations: Builds a team the customer relies on without escalation.
- Mutual Respect: Treats the team and operations partners as one team.
- Integrity: Keeps their own records and forecast honest and enforces the same across the team.
- Safety: Ensures everyone customer-facing on the team meets safety expectations.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
This role operates primarily in a professional office environment, with regular visits to customer data center and active construction sites. Site visits may involve exposure to noise, electrical and mechanical equipment, and varying weather conditions. Required PPE must be worn on all sites. Duties occasionally require standing, walking, climbing stairs, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
