Position Overview

This role involves leading and performing a variety of municipal engineering tasks, including project planning, design, construction oversight, and administration. The Civil Engineer works closely with the Public Works Director/City Engineer and supervises technical staff, contractors, and consultants. The role requires strong leadership, problem-solving, and technical expertise to manage public works projects efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage public works projects valued at $5M+
  • Supervise and coordinate technical staff in project design and construction
  • Prepare project designs, specifications, and contract documents
  • Administer project construction contracts, including payments and change orders
  • Conduct and oversee inspections of construction sites
  • Coordinate grant applications for infrastructure funding
  • Review engineering plans and building permit applications
  • Manage the use and training of CAD software in the department
  • Investigate public concerns, conduct field inspections, and ensure compliance with regulations

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • 6-8 years of civil engineering experience, including supervisory roles
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Iowa (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
  • Valid drivers license
