The posting

The Portfolio Insights team operates as a core strategic partner to Convex's Insurance and Reinsurance divisions across our London and US operations. Covering over $6.5bn in GWP, we deliver data-driven portfolio insights, relative risk assessment, and strategic recommendations to maximize value across complex commercial lines.

What You’ll Be Doing As a Senior Portfolio Actuary focusing on Casualty and Financial lines, you will work closely with underwriting functions, generating portfolio insights to support portfolio management and product development across a highly diverse, multi-geography product suite in London and the US. You will be integral to the commercial strategy for Casualty and Financial Lines, together with experts in ceded reinsurance, exposure management, actuarial, capital, and innovation to build highly resilient, long-term net portfolios, design pricing models, and bridge the gap between technical actuarial science and commercial decision-making. You will also be required to support on other Property & Specialty lines from time to time.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Portfolio Design & Optimisation

  • Work with Underwriters to strategically design and manage net portfolios across Casualty and Financial Lines to ensure long-term, sustainable growth, effectively balancing risk and return through the cycle.
  • Alongside Underwriting, partner cross-functionally with Ceded Re, Exposure Management, Capital, and Reserving teams
  • Link portfolio and underwriting strategy directly into business planning and reserving cycles, ensuring underlying insights actively shape (and are consistent with) top-down targets and reserving views.
  • Contribute to the design and enhancement of portfolio optimisation frameworks to unlock strategic value and drive underwriting and analytics decisions across Convex.

Risk Benchmarking & Pricing

  • Partner with underwriters on bespoke pricing, structuring, and evaluation of large, complex, or non-standard transactions that have a material impact on portfolio performance.
  • Lead the design, specification, and parameterization of pricing models, dashboards, and associated decision tools in partnership with the broader Actuarial and Underwriting functions.
  • Support the development of pricing and benchmarking capabilities, focusing on key risk attributes to assist underwriters’ live negotiations and serve as a robust sense check against initial portfolio intentions.

Embedded Support & Business Partnering

  • Act as a dedicated partner to junior and senior Underwriters, providing constructive challenge and data-led insight to help influence underwriting strategy.
  • Work with underwriters to identify and evaluate new business and product launches, class extensions, and emerging coverage propositions to support disciplined, profitable portfolio growth.
  • Support and drive Convex’s multi-disciplinary engagement model, fostering open communication and active collaboration across Analytics, Actuarial, and Underwriting.

Team Support & Management

  • Mentor junior members of the Portfolio Insights team
  • Support the broader Portfolio Insights team, helping to shape our culture.

Portfolio Reviews

  • Deliver regular portfolio reviews with Underwriting at both micro (segment/client) and macro (market) levels to uncover emerging trends, loss drivers, and market dynamics relevant to Casualty and Financial Lines (or others).
  • Engage with underwriting leadership to review open market and delegated performance, translating analytical insights into clear, actionable underwriting guidance.
  • Feed portfolio review findings directly into Reserving and Capital teams to inform forward-looking profitability views.

Analytics Modernisation & Data Culture

  • Champion data literacy and the business adoption of analytical tools across the underwriting community.
  • Evaluate emerging data sources, analytics techniques, and visualization tools to surface insights quickly, cleanly, and accurately.

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

  • Qualified Actuary (FIA / FFA or equivalent) with 6+ years of actuarial pricing or portfolio management experience in commercial insurance or reinsurance lines in the London market or US market.
  • SME- and product-knowledge of Casualty and/or Financial Lines
  • Solid technical experience with core actuarial concepts and methodologies relevant to Casualty and Financial lines.
  • Excellent influencing skills, with an aptitude for anticipating stakeholder needs and thinking about the right ways to provide support; proven track record of influencing (senior) underwriters while maintaining a collaborative, partnership-first approach.
  • Communicating with impact: exceptional ability to translate complex technical actuarial concepts into concise, high-impact insights for non-technical stakeholders (both written and verbal).
  • Collaborative nature: an ability to share workload and foster open communication with your peers across Convex, as well as identifying other people’s strengths and how they complement your own.
  • Intellectual curiosity: an investigative mindset and desire to dig beneath and beyond the numbers.
  • Desire to take on mentorship responsibilities and collective responsibilities for the overall team’s success.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
