Position Overview

Convo is seeking an accomplished and forward-thinking Head of Engineering to lead its engineering function, establish technical direction, and drive the development and delivery of scalable, high-quality technology solutions.

The ideal candidate will bring a combination of strong technical expertise, engineering leadership, product and business acumen, and a hands-on approach to technology execution. This role requires a leader who can effectively translate business requirements into technical solutions, guide architectural decisions, address complex engineering challenges, and ensure consistent delivery across engineering teams.

A key strategic expectation is the ability to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an integral part of the engineering ecosystem. The successful candidate must demonstrate an AI-agnostic mindset, with the ability to independently evaluate and adopt the most effective AI models, platforms, tools, and development methodologies to enhance engineering productivity, accelerate delivery, and optimize resources.

The position requires a technology leader who can combine strategic oversight with functional and technical involvement, ensuring that engineering remains innovative, efficient, scalable, and aligned with the organization's business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

A. Engineering Strategy & Technical Leadership

  • Define and execute the engineering strategy in alignment with the organization's technology roadmap and business priorities.
  • Lead the overall engineering function, providing direction across software development, solution architecture, quality assurance, and technical delivery.
  • Establish and maintain scalable, secure, resilient, and maintainable technology architectures.
  • Drive sound technical decision-making, ensuring appropriate selection of technology stacks, frameworks, infrastructure, and development methodologies.
  • Maintain active technical involvement in architecture reviews, solution design, code reviews, and complex engineering challenges.
  • Identify opportunities to modernize existing systems, improve technical capabilities, and strengthen engineering practices.

B. AI-Enabled Engineering & Technology Innovation

  • Establish AI-enabled engineering practices across the software development lifecycle, integrating AI into requirements analysis, development, testing, debugging, documentation, and deployment.
  • Drive the adoption of AI-powered development tools, coding assistants, autonomous agents, and automation solutions to improve engineering productivity and delivery efficiency.
  • Maintain an AI-agnostic approach, evaluating technologies and platforms based on their effectiveness, suitability, scalability, and business value rather than vendor or tool dependency.
  • Identify opportunities to redesign conventional engineering workflows through AI adoption and intelligent automation.
  • Promote an engineering model that maximizes output, efficiency, and quality through effective utilization of AI capabilities.
  • Continuously assess emerging technologies and translate relevant innovations into practical organizational capabilities.

C. Engineering Execution & Delivery Management

  • Own end-to-end engineering execution, ensuring timely delivery of technology initiatives while maintaining quality, reliability, and performance standards.
  • Translate product and business requirements into technical roadmaps, development priorities, and executable delivery plans.
  • Establish engineering performance metrics and accountability frameworks covering productivity, delivery predictability, code quality, system performance, and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure effective implementation of development standards, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, code management, and deployment practices.
  • Proactively address technical bottlenecks, production issues, system dependencies, and technical debt.
  • Optimize engineering capacity and resource allocation through effective planning, process improvements, and technology enablement.

D. Functional & Technical Engineering Excellence

  • Maintain a strong understanding of modern software engineering practices, system architecture, application development, APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, and emerging technologies.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and support to engineering teams, particularly in critical design, development, troubleshooting, and problem-solving scenarios.
  • Review and challenge technical solutions to ensure they are fit for purpose, commercially viable, and aligned with business requirements.
  • Ensure appropriate engineering standards, technical documentation, testing frameworks, and quality controls are consistently maintained.
  • Foster a culture of engineering ownership, technical excellence, continuous improvement, and practical innovation.

E. Organizational & Stakeholder Leadership

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing engineering organization with clearly defined roles, responsibilities, and accountability.
  • Develop engineering leadership capabilities and strengthen technical ownership across teams.
  • Work closely with Product, Project Management, Business Analysis, and executive leadership to ensure alignment between business priorities and engineering execution.
  • Provide management with visibility into engineering performance, delivery commitments, resource requirements, technical risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Build a culture that encourages experimentation, collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in software engineering and technology development, including significant experience in engineering leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of leading engineering teams and successfully delivering complex software products, platforms, or technology solutions.
  • Strong technical expertise in software architecture, system design, modern application development, APIs, databases, cloud technologies, and software engineering practices.
  • Demonstrable hands-on technical capability, with the ability to actively engage in architectural decisions, code reviews, technical assessments, and engineering problem-solving.
  • Practical experience in adopting AI-powered development tools, AI coding assistants, automation, and emerging AI technologies within engineering environments.
  • Strong understanding of modern engineering delivery frameworks, DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, software quality, and system scalability.
