Job Summary The Boiler Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment in accordance with established procedures and under the direction of the Operations Supervisor and Plant Manager. This position monitors plant systems, starts and stops machinery and equipment, supports maintenance activities, and responds appropriately to changing operating conditions. When specific instructions are not available, the Boiler Operator applies sound judgment, experience, and initiative while complying with all company safety, environmental, and operational policies. Essential Functions
Monitor and control the operation of all plant machinery and equipment, including boilers, chillers, generators, and cooling towers. Monitor and be responsible for the effect on plant operations of all activities occurring in the Plant and in the Distribution System Operate–start, run, monitor, adjust, and stop–Plant machinery and equipment in a safe manner.
Operate plant equipment in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements, and contribute to the continual improvement of these practices.
Monitor and record Plant operating parameters. Monitor customer consumption levels and demands via the SCADA system. Perform tests of operating equipment as directed. Monitor water chemistry in the various plant water systems and adjust chemical feed systems as required. Be responsible for the Control Room’s appearance and housekeeping. Upgrade skills and knowledge of Plant systems, equipment, and components as directed or required. Have or work to obtain knowledge and/or skill sets held by Maintenance Mechanics Be willing to work overtime, either scheduled or at short notice. Serve on the safety committee as assigned!
Learn and comply with all company safety and environmental policies and procedures. Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts and overtime as necessary.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent.
Ability to work in hot and cold environments, climb and work from ladders, lift up to 75 pounds, and stand for several consecutive hours.
Valid driver’s license. Mechanical aptitude and skill set required. Basic skills to learn complex systems, work under direction, and react to emergencies using judgment and intuitive skills. Familiar with personal computer operations and digital equipment controls Good lab techniques for performing water tests.
Preferred Qualifications
Universal EPA 608 certification. At least one year of experience operating equipment in a physical plant environment. Experience operating high-pressure boilers, large electrically driven chillers, large cooling towers, and diesel engines. Experience in chemical treatment systems, including pot feeders, chemical pumps, softeners, reverse osmosis units, demineralizers, and polishers is desired. Experience desired with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) systems. Previous experience operating high-pressure boilers, large electrical-driven chillers, large cooling towers, steam turbines, steam-driven pumps, dual-drive steam, and electric drive fans preferred. City of Omaha 1st Grade Stationary Engineer license, with several years of experience preferred.

Ability to learn complex plant systems, follow direction, and respond effectively to emergencies using sound judgment and operational knowledge.
Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Knowledgeable and experienced in the operation of digital and pneumatic controls.
Working Conditions This position primarily works in the control room of a thermal plant and requires regular access to plant areas by stairs and ladders, including difficult-to-reach spaces. Working conditions may include heights, high and low temperatures, limited lighting, and high humidity. Operators normally work 10-hour shifts but may be assigned 12-hour shifts by the Operations Supervisor to maintain required plant staffing and comply with City of Omaha boiler operating codes. Overtime may be required on short notice to meet operational and regulatory requirements. Compensation & Benefits The expected compensation range for this position is $35.00–$45.00 per hour, plus overtime eligibility and annual bonus potential.
