Job Description
We are looking for a talented Health, Safety and Environment Project Specialist - Senior to join our team specializing in Health and Safety for Cummins, Inc. in Plainfield, IN.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Lead health, safety, and environmental (HSE) initiatives by partnering with employees and cross-functional teams to promote a positive safety culture and regulatory compliance.
- Analyze hazard assessments, environmental aspects, risk evaluations, audit findings, and performance metrics to identify risks and improvement opportunities.
- Develop, manage, and implement HSE projects, including project plans, timelines, budgets, resources, milestones, and success metrics.
- Track and communicate project progress, manage project risks, and resolve issues to ensure successful delivery of HSE objectives.
- Drive continuous improvement by applying the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology to reduce risks and enhance site performance.
- Develop and maintain HSE policies, procedures, training materials, tools, and resources while ensuring document control and data privacy compliance.
- Lead training sessions, coach employees and team members on HSE processes, and support professional development across the organization.
- Support Health, Safety, and Environmental Management Systems through audits, compliance activities, innovative risk-reduction solutions, and adoption of industry best practices.
Responsibilities

- Influence the Health, Safety and Environmental Culture - Influence leaders and employees by modeling strong safety behaviors and making safety a shared responsibility.
- Measurement and Evaluation of Health, Safety and Environment Performance - Use meaningful KPIs and trend analysis to drive continuous improvement and inform strategy.
- Risk Assessment - Evaluates hazards within the work environment by applying hazard identification and risk assessment techniques to analyze and prioritize risk, enabling a selection of control measures that reduce risk as low as reasonably practicable.
Qualifications
Education/Experience:
- College, university, or equivalent degree required. Occupational Health, Safety or Environmental degree preferred.
- Intermediate relevant experience required, including team leadership and project management. Experience with Industrial Safety Standards preferred. 3-5 years of experience. Additional Responsibilities:
- Lead cross-functional HSE improvement projects involving Operations, Engineering, Materials, Maintenance, Facilities, and Quality to ensure timely delivery of risk reduction objectives.
- Manage the HSE Master Project List and associated governance processes, ensuring projects are prioritized based on risk reduction impact, regulatory compliance requirements, and business objectives.
- Develop business cases and capital appropriation requests for HSE projects by quantifying risk exposure, compliance obligations, operational impact, and expected risk reduction benefits.
- Serve as project manager for major HSE initiatives including machine safety improvements, ergonomics risk reduction, powered industrial vehicle (PIV) reduction initiatives, pollution prevention projects, and other strategic HSE programs.
- Establish project timelines, milestones, resource requirements, and performance metrics while ensuring accountability for project deliverables across functional teams.
- Partner with engineering and operations teams to incorporate Design for HSE principles into facility modifications, process changes, equipment installations, and automation projects.
- Facilitate hazard elimination and risk reduction reviews utilizing HEART, HSEMS, Management of Change, and other corporate risk assessment tools to ensure projects deliver sustainable improvements.
- Track and communicate project performance through dashboards, scorecards, and executive reviews, providing regular updates to site leadership regarding project status, risk reduction achievements, and resource needs.
- Identify external funding opportunities, corporate resources, and best practices that can accelerate HSE risk reduction initiatives and improve project return on investment.
- Lead contractor coordination and project implementation activities to ensure projects are executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
