**This is a full time, salaried, hybrid position based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Job Summary This job will connect Children's Wisconsin's clinical and business priorities to practical technology direction and solution designs. Personally develop enterprise roadmaps and standards, architect complex solutions with particular depth in infrastructure, and establish and lead the architecture practice. The role will improve technology investment decisions, reduce unnecessary complexity and risk, and guide delivery of secure, reliable, and supportable services. The position combines principal architect responsibilities with management of a developing enterprise architecture function. Initially performs the architecture work directly, establishing the methods, relationships, and reusable designs needed to support delivery; continues substantial individual architecture work as the team grows. Scope spans business capabilities, applications, data and integration, infrastructure, and cloud, with domain specialists contributing detailed expertise. Partners with the CISO's organization, which retains security architecture and security policy ownership.
Essential Functions
- Enterprise direction and roadmaps. Translates organizational strategy and clinical and business needs into current state assessments, target architectures, and achievable transition roadmaps. Connects business capabilities to applications, data, platforms, and services. Identifies dependencies, duplication, technical debt, and lifecycle risks and recommends sequenced improvements aligned with available funding and delivery capacity.
- Solution architecture. Personally leads architecture for complex initiatives from discovery through implementation. Defines requirements, integration points, system boundaries, and quality expectations for availability, performance, security, recovery, and support. Produces solution diagrams, options analyses, design decisions, and implementation guidance. Resolves cross domain tradeoffs and validates that delivered solutions meet the approved design intent.
- Infrastructure and cloud architecture. Provides deep architecture expertise across enterprise networks, compute, virtualization, storage, identity dependencies, resilience, and hybrid cloud. Develops reference architectures and evaluates hosting and modernization options. Works with Cloud Engineering on Azure foundations supporting analytics and later cloud expansion, and with Infrastructure on workload placement and phased data center migration designs.
- Architecture governance and standards. Establishes practical architecture principles, standards, review criteria, and decision records. Leads reviews early enough to influence design and purchasing decisions. Documents exceptions, owners, risks, and remediation plans; escalates unresolved decisions through approved governance. Scales review effort to impact and risk and tracks decisions through delivery.
- Investment and technology evaluation. Evaluates proposed technologies and vendor solutions for enterprise fit, integration, operating cost, lifecycle, and supportability. Develops recommendations with service owners, the IT Business Office, and procurement. Provides architecture input to investment prioritization and sourcing decisions and identifies opportunities to reuse platforms or retire redundant technology.
- Architecture practice development. Builds and maintains a usable architecture repository, including standards, reference designs, roadmaps, and decision records. Establishes a repeatable engagement model with project and service teams. Coordinates application portfolio and dependency information with designated record owners and connects architecture priorities to enterprise planning and delivery.
- People and practice leadership. Plans architecture workload and staffing, recruits the additional architect as approved, and establishes goals and development plans. Coaches staff, evaluates performance, and addresses performance needs as the team grows. Mentors technical leads across IS and builds shared architecture skills without creating dependence on a single decision maker.
- Delivery partnership. Works directly with engineers, application owners, analytics teams, and vendors to test assumptions, assess feasibility, and resolve design issues. Participates in proofs of concept and reviews technical deliverables. Provides architecture guidance through implementation and operational handoff; engineering teams retain build and operational accountability.
- Communication and accountability. Explains technology choices, costs, dependencies, and risks to clinical, business, and technology leaders. Facilitates decisions across teams with competing priorities. Reports roadmap progress, material exceptions, and architecture outcomes to the CTO and governance groups and adjusts priorities as organizational needs change.

- Ability to assume formal people management responsibilities as staffing grows.
