Job Description
Accountable for ensuring the proper care, custody, control, and safekeeping of items admitted as evidence, including receipt and storage. Releases evidence to/from authorized parties or disposes of evidence as appropriate (completing the chain-of-custody) and tracks evidence transfers.
Responsibilities
1. Receives evidence and ensures the proper care, custody, control, and safekeeping of items admitted as evidence. Reviews all items submitted prior to acceptance to determine if evidence meets acceptance criteria; verifies submitters’ information, which includes: name, agency, billing entity, contact name and telephone number, and case number. Verifies analysis requested and assigns unique case and/or exhibit number; logs in evidence and securely stores evidence. Organizes internal routing of evidence and releasing and transporting of evidence to chemist.
2. Interfaces with submitting agencies and courts by answering routine inquires regarding status of evidence in the analytical process and refers other inquiries to appropriate personnel. Receives court standbys and advises Chemist and Physician.
3. Maintains detailed records and active quality control/assurance programs and assists in evidence audits. Documents the validity and quality of the evidence handling process, ensuring legal requirements are met and testifies as required. Assists in developing written evidence handling procedures.
4. Cleans, organizes, and secures evidence storage area; properly stores items into storage area maximizing the use of available space.
5. Assists with functions in other sections by answering telephones, filing, preparing and sending evidence to reference laboratories, and assisting with laboratory billing functions.
6. Performs other duties as assigned and required by department.
Qualifications
Education, Experience and Training: Graduation from an accredited high school/GED program. Three (3) years of clerical or record keeping work related experience or 45 hours of college credit or a combination of the two.
Special Requirements: Ability to communicate effectively and maintain professional relationships with others. Ability to maintain accurate records and operate a personal computer. Must possess knowledge of chemical and biological safe handling procedures. Must pass criminal background check. Mandatory drug test prior to and during employment.
Physical/Environmental Requirements: Routinely required to work in areas with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. Required to follow good laboratory practices and safety precautions in the use of personal protective equipment. Requires manual dexterity, mobility, and visual acuity sufficient to receive, transport, store, and release evidence. Requires moderate lifting. Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license.
