Job Description: Marine Engineering Drafter
Role Overview
The Marine Engineering Drafter preparesaccurate 2D drawings and 3D models for marine pump packages, pipingarrangements, equipment layouts and fabricated components. The role supportsthe engineering and project teams by translating technical requirements, supplier information and engineering instructions into clear drawings forcustomer approval, fabrication and project documentation.
Key Responsibilities
· Prepare and revise 2D AutoCADdrawings, including general arrangements, equipment layouts, pump skidassemblies, base frames, piping layouts and fabrication details.
· Create and update 3D AutoCADmodels of equipment, piping and supporting structures to communicatearrangements and identify potential clashes or access constraints forengineering review.
· Produce detailed drawings withdimensions, sections, tolerances, material specifications and weldinginformation based on approved engineering inputs.
· Develop piping isometricdrawings and bills of materials where required.
· Interpret customerspecifications, engineering sketches, supplier drawings and technical data toincorporate the correct equipment dimensions and connection details.
· Coordinate with engineers, project personnel, suppliers and fabrication teams to clarify requirements andresolve drawing discrepancies before release.
· Support workshop measurementsand site or vessel surveys when required, following applicable access andsafety procedures.
· Update drawings to reflectapproved changes and prepare as-built drawings based on verified information.
· Maintain drawing registers, revision histories, file naming and controlled drawing records so teams use thelatest approved version.
· Prepare drawing submissions andtechnical documentation in line with project schedules and applicable projectrequirements.
· Flag missing information, dimensional conflicts and potential fabrication issues promptly; obtainengineering approval for technical changes.
Essential Skills and Requirements
· ITE certificate, diploma orequivalent qualification in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,Mechanical Design or a related discipline; relevant practical draftingexperience will also be considered.
· Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD,including layers, blocks, external references, dimensioning, annotation, layouts, scales and plotting.
· Proficiency in 3D AutoCAD,including solid modelling, assembly layouts, sections and generating 2D viewsfrom 3D models.
· Ability to read and interpretengineering drawings, equipment data sheets and technical specifications.
· Working knowledge of mechanicalcomponents, piping, flanges, valves, pumps, base frames and fabricationmethods.
· Understanding of drawingconventions, dimensional accuracy, tolerances and revision control.
· Strong attention to detail andthe ability to check drawings against source information before submission.
· Ability to organise multipledrawing tasks, meet agreed deadlines and communicate technical questionsclearly.
Preferred Experience
· Relevant drafting experience inmarine equipment, pump packages, shipbuilding, ship repair or mechanicalfabrication.
· Experience preparing drawingsfor pump skids, piping systems and welded structures.
· Familiarity with piping andinstrumentation diagrams and marine project drawing submission requirements.
· Exposure to workshopfabrication and practical considerations such as assembly access, maintenanceclearance and manufacturability.
· Experience with additional 3Ddesign software, such as Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks, would be an advantagebut does not replace the requirement for 2D and 3D AutoCAD skills.
Key Working Expectations
· Accuracy: Deliver clear, consistent drawings with correct dimensions andequipment interfaces.
· Timeliness: Complete drawing submissions and revisions within agreed projectschedules.
· Ownership: Clarify uncertainties early rather than proceeding on unverifiedassumptions.
· Document control: Maintain traceable revisions and release drawings only through theagreed review and approval process.
· Practical coordination: Incorporate approved workshop and engineering feedback to reduceavoidable rework.
