About Our Job

This unpaid internship is designed for an individual fluent in ASL who is interested in learning how accessibility services are coordinated within HRCP Access for All Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS). The intern will shadow the Staff Interpreter to understand how ASL Interpreting and CART services are scheduled, how community support is managed, and how outreach, resource development, and administrative operations function within a government accessibility division.

What We Offer

All City and County of Denver emerging talent positions are supported by a trained hiring manager and encouraged to attend up to 4 sessions of professional development each season (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall).

Location & Schedule

The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.

What You’ll Do

As an ASL Interpreter Intern, you will participate in a structured, supervised internship designed to meet the requirements of your Interpreter Training Program (ITP) and prepare you for entry level practice as a professional interpreter. Your learning will center on observation, preparation, teaming, ethical reasoning, skill development, and reflective practice. As an ASL Interpreter Intern you will have the opportunity to experience:

  • Support scheduling and coordination of ASL interpreter and CART service requests, including communication tracking and confidentiality.
  • Complete required observation and support‑team hours by attending full assignments (including pre/debriefs), engaging in reflective discussions, and upholding the RID CPC throughout all interpreting activities.
  • Prepare for every assignment by reviewing and requesting prep materials, researching content, participating in pre/post briefs, and analyzing your performance and decision making for ongoing growth.
  • Develop a foundational understanding of freelance interpreting practices with professional awareness by learning team approaches, exploring community involvement opportunities, and examining power and bias.
  • Provide general administrative and project support, including organizing files, preparing materials, and helping with events.

What You’ll Bring

We value diversity of ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, sexual identity, gender, religion, language, ability, and experience and exemplify this through the makeup of our team at all levels. You'll be right at home here if you cultivate strong relationships and push yourself, your work, the people around you and Denver to the next level.

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Fluency in American Sign Language along with a strong understanding of Deaf culture and community norms.
  • Experience with administrative tasks or customer/community support.
  • Comfort using tools such as Teams, Zoom, Canva, and basic email platforms.
  • Professionalism, reliability, confidentiality, and a working knowledge of ethical frameworks such as the RID CPC. Manage prep materials, track assignments, and participate actively in pre briefs, debriefs, and documentation requirements.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Requirement: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in ASL Interpretation or closely related field, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).
  • Experience Requirement: None
  • Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
  • License/Certification Requirement: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Mandatory documentation required to be considered for this position:

  • Resume: 1-2 pages, Indicating the types of settings you have experience interpreting in, how many pro bono interpreting hours you have completed, any memberships with Deaf Associations (national or local) and interpreting associations (national or local).
  • Cover Letter
  • Transcripts – either official or unofficial, dated within your current academic term.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
