The Role

Designer Group is seeking an experienced Mechanical QA Engineer to join our project team supporting the delivery of a major data centre project in Germany.

Reporting to the Mechanical QA Lead, you will support the day-to-day delivery of the project quality programme across the mechanical scope.

This is a site-focused role involving inspection of mechanical installations, management of quality documentation, monitoring of Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), identification and close-out of quality issues, system walkdowns and preparation of mechanical systems for commissioning and turnover.

You will work closely with the Mechanical QA Lead, Construction Managers, Engineers, Supervisors, Commissioning teams, subcontractors, vendors and client representatives to ensure mechanical works are completed to the required project standards.

The role would particularly suit someone with QA/QC experience within data centres, mission-critical facilities, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, industrial or large-scale M&E construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

As Mechanical QA Engineer, you will:

  • Support the Mechanical QA Lead in implementing the project-specific Quality Plan.
  • Carry out regular inspections of mechanical installations to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, technical submittals, manufacturer requirements and project quality standards.
  • Complete and maintain Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), inspection records, check sheets and associated quality documentation.
  • Inspect mechanical systems including HVAC, chilled water systems, pipework, pumps, mechanical plant, plumbing, drainage and associated building services.
  • Verify that installations are completed in accordance with approved construction drawings and agreed quality benchmarks.
  • Support the inspection and approval of mock-ups, first-of-kind installations and benchmark installations.
  • Raise quality observations and Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) where required and support their timely investigation, corrective action and close-out.
  • Monitor outstanding defects, snags and quality actions with Mechanical Engineers, Supervisors and subcontractors.
  • Participate in mechanical system walkdowns with construction, QA, commissioning, subcontractor and client teams.
  • Assist with the creation, maintenance and close-out of mechanical punch lists / snag lists.
  • Verify that mechanical systems are complete and ready to progress to pre-commissioning, commissioning and turnover.
  • Review mechanical installation and testing records prior to system handover.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs) where required.
  • Witness relevant mechanical testing and ensure associated documentation is accurately completed.
  • Work closely with the Commissioning team to identify and resolve quality issues that could impact commissioning readiness.
  • Assist with the preparation and compilation of mechanical test packs, turnover packs and handover documentation.
  • Ensure quality records are correctly uploaded and maintained within the project document management system.
  • Support the completion of O&M documentation, test certificates, as-built records and other project handover documentation.
  • Track quality actions and provide progress updates to the Mechanical QA Lead.
  • Support internal, client and third-party quality audits.
  • Assist with quality reporting including NCR status, inspection progress, outstanding punch items and system completion.
  • Liaise with subcontractors to ensure quality requirements are understood and consistently implemented.
  • Support continuous improvement and lessons-learned activities across the project.
  • Maintain high standards of documentation, traceability and quality compliance throughout the construction and commissioning process.

Requirements

  • A qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a relevant mechanical trade/technical discipline.
  • Previous experience within mechanical construction, engineering or QA/QC.
  • Experience working as a Mechanical QA Engineer, Mechanical QA/QC Engineer, Mechanical Engineer or Quality Engineer within an M&E environment.
  • Experience within data centres or mission-critical construction would be highly advantageous.
  • Candidates from pharmaceutical, semiconductor, industrial or other technically complex environments are also encouraged to apply.
  • Good technical understanding of mechanical building services installations.
  • Experience with mechanical systems such as HVAC, chilled water, pipework, pumps and major mechanical plant.
  • Understanding of Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), inspection records, NCRs, punch lists and quality documentation.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications and technical submittals.
  • Good understanding of construction quality processes from installation through testing, commissioning and handover.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
  • Good organisational and planning ability.
  • Ability to identify quality issues and follow them through to satisfactory close-out.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with construction teams, subcontractors and project stakeholders.
  • A proactive and practical approach to quality assurance.
  • Good working English.
  • German language capability would be advantageous but is not essential unless specifically required by the project.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
