As the Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for product line maintenance, product design and cost improvements, and current products engineering activities through the design, development, testing, and documentation of mechanical systems and components. Working as part of a cross-functional team, this position contributes to engineering projects from concept through production by creating innovative, reliable, and manufacturable solutions that meet customer needs and business objectives. This position develops technical expertise while gaining experience with Toro products, processes, engineering standards, manufacturing methods, and project execution.
What Will You Do?
In order to grow and build a successful career with The Toro Company, you will be responsible for:
- Develop component and system-level designs for product enhancements, warranty improvements, maintenance, and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and related product documentation.
- Perform engineering analysis, feasibility studies, prototype evaluations, and design validation activities
- Collaborate with product evaluation, manufacturing, sourcing, quality, service, marketing, and supplier teams to ensure designs meet performance, cost, durability, safety, and manufacturability requirements.
- Work closely with Product Development Lab personnel in the creation of prototype components, assemblies, and machines.
- Support prototype builds, product testing, and troubleshooting activities while documenting findings and implementing design improvements.
- Research materials, manufacturing processes, and emerging technologies to enhance product performance and value.
- Assist in resolving product quality issues and implementing continuous improvement opportunities for existing products.
- Ensure engineering documentation is completed accurately and maintained in accordance with company standards and product lifecycle management (PLM) requirements.
- Apply Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles and engineering best practices throughout the product development process.
- Respond quickly to manufacturing requests, assembly issues, deviation requests, substitutions and production line challenges
- Work with suppliers and internal stakeholders to support component development, sourcing activities, and production readiness.
- Maintain compliance with Toro engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and applicable industry safety standards.
What Do You Need?
To be considered for this role, an individual should meet the following minimal requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Level determined by years of engineering experience in product development, design engineering, manufacturing engineering, or related technical fields:Engineer I = 0-2 years of experience Engineer II = 2-4 years of experience Engineer III = 4-7 years of experience
- Experience using 3D CAD software for product design and engineering documentation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a team-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Creo or similar 3D CAD platforms.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings, GD&T, BOM structures, and documentation control processes.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, welding, castings, machining, and plastics.
- Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems (e.g., PTC Windchill) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP).
- Familiarity with DFMA principles, product testing, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Able and willing to lead effective cross-functional meetings and coordinate cross-functional work.
Other Job-Related Components:
- Work Schedule: Expectations to be in office 5 days per week on a regular basis with occasional flexibility.
- Working Conditions: In office working environment with access to fabrication and testing labs on site.
- Working Relationships: This position regularly collaborates with engineering, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, service, marketing, testing, and supplier teams to successfully develop, launch, and support products throughout their life cycle.
- Travel: This position travels up to 20% of the time to test sites, distributors, customers, vendors, manufacturing facilities, and global partner locations in support of product development, testing, validation, and production activities.

- Competitive Salary – The pay range takes into account skills, experience, education, and location. It is not common to be hired at or near the top of the range; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the annual pay range is between $85,000 - $110,000. Cash compensation is one piece of our competitive total rewards package.
