Job Description
Help us build the future and we’ll help you build a rewarding and purposeful career.
Join a team that brings inspirational architecture, landscapes, townscapes and places to our world, and we’ll provide you unlimited space to grow.
Due to a significant major rail project win and an ongoing strong workload, we are seeking an accomplished Technical Director – Structures AND a Lead Structural Engineer to join our well-respected team in Melbourne and Victoria. These key positions will help deliver the detailed structural design of major underground railway stations on a major rail infrastructure programme. Beyond this initial project, you will contribute to major transport, water, building and other complex structural projects across Australia.
These are rare opportunities to join a long-established structural engineering team with a proud history of delivering complex projects across Victoria and beyond. Working alongside experienced technical specialists and emerging engineering leaders, you’ll have the opportunity to help shape the next chapter of our Structures team — strengthening technical capability, mentoring the next generation of engineers and influencing the direction of our practice for years to come.
As senior technical leaders, you’ll be trusted advisers to our clients and project teams, setting technical direction and applying your expertise to some of our most complex structural engineering challenges. You will lead structural design packages, guide engineering teams and resolve challenging multidisciplinary interfaces. We value sound engineering judgement and practical delivery experience as much as seniority or job title.
These diverse and exciting roles will see you:
- Leading the detailed structural design of major infrastructure projects, initially focusing on underground station structures, with opportunities across GHD's broader structures portfolio.
- Providing expert technical guidance and oversight to project teams, ensuring robust, practical and compliant engineering solutions. Setting design philosophy and resolving complex structural challenges involving reinforced concrete, steelwork, foundations, retaining systems and construction staging, drawing on specialists as required.
- Leading and reviewing design documentation, technical reports, specifications and other critical project deliverables.
- Building trusted client relationships, providing strategic technical advice and bringing your expertise to proposals, presentations and new project opportunities.
- Supporting project planning and the effective coordination of technical resources across multiple significant projects.
- Mentoring and developing engineers, sharing your expertise and strengthening structural engineering capability across the team.
What would you bring to the team?
- A Bachelor of Civil Engineering and 20+ years’ experience in structural engineering design and project delivery, ideally within a consulting environment. Previous underground station experience will be highly regarded.
- A proven ability to lead substantial structural design packages and exercise independent engineering judgement. Underground station, rail or heavy-civil experience is highly regarded; strong structural generalists from complex transport, water, buildings or other major infrastructure are also encouraged to apply.
- Expert knowledge of relevant Australian Standards (including AS5100), design codes and compliance requirements.
- Advanced capability in interpreting and reviewing structural analysis, with experience using tools such as SpaceGASS, Strand7 or equivalent. Practical understanding of detailed design, documentation, checking and constructability is important.
- A collaborative approach, the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, and an interest in developing others. Commercial awareness and an ability to anticipate technical and delivery risks are valued.
Based in Melbourne, you will work with GHD's technical teams and, as required, project and alliance partners. The initial focus is a major rail infrastructure detailed design programme, with longer-term opportunities across GHD's transport, water, buildings and wider structures work. Flexible working arrangements can be discussed.
Interested? Apply before cob 17 November 2026.
