The posting

Company Description Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. We build, power, and evolve the tools and technologies that connect millions of entrepreneurs with millions of buyers around the world. As an Etsy employee, you will tackle unique, meaningful, and large-scale problems alongside passionate coworkers, all the while making a rewarding impact and Keeping Commerce Human.

We believe exceptional companies are built by exceptional teams, and we're intentional about it. That means hiring great people, setting them up for success from day one, and giving them real reasons to grow their careers here. We invest in development that goes beyond promotions, and we foster the trust and relationships that help people do their best work together.

What's the Role?

We’re looking for a Counsel, Marketing & Commercial to be a trusted advisor to our marketing team and to give practical, transactional legal support across our global business. You’ll work on the many commercial contracts that grow out of Etsy’s creative marketing efforts. Your role is to help our teams move with confidence while you spot and reduce legal and commercial risk.

This is a full time role reporting to the Director, Assistant General Counsel, M&A & Commercial.

What does the day-to-day look like?

No two weeks look quite the same. Here’s a sample of what you’ll do with us:

  • Draft and negotiate US and international marketing agreements. These include performance and growth marketing (paid search, SEO/SEM, and targeted ad buys), affiliate and affiliate-network agreements, social media agreements, PR agreements, participant and publicity releases, and personnel agreements for embedded contractors. You may also support Above the Line and brand work — TV, radio, and Out of Home — along with agreements with ad agencies, media agencies, and other creative partners.
  • Guide our marketing-technology work across the full vendor lifecycle, from choosing a vendor to offboarding one in a professional and protective way. You’ll shape SaaS, data-analytics, and ad-tech agreements, including indemnities, liability limits, IP rights, and data-protection terms.
  • Balance breadth and depth. You’ll handle a high volume of everyday, lower-complexity agreements with care and good judgment, and you’ll also team up with our Sourcing colleagues on RFIs and more complex deals.
  • Partner with our marketing, brand, creative, and engineering teams as they design campaigns and build new tools, keeping commercial, compliance, and privacy needs in balance. Work closely with partners across the business, others in Legal, and outside counsel through clear communication.
  • Know when to say “yes,” "no," or “maybe, but…,” and when to raise a question with the wider team. You’ll keep in mind that the company is your client, and you’ll advocate for it and protect its interests.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualifications

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • A JD, admission to a state bar (NY or CA preferred), and eligibility to work in-house in New York.
  • 3+ years experience, at a law firm and in-house, with marketing and commercial contracts for technology and e-commerce companies.
  • Experience as the main point of contact for clients, guiding the legal side of a project, and the ability to explain legal ideas to technical and business partners in plain, clear language.
  • Care for sharing risks, and ways to reduce them, with colleagues and leaders.
  • Solid business, negotiation, and communication skills. You can read a spreadsheet, analyze details, and build a deck.

Compensation & Benefits

In addition to salary, you'll be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family. Base salary is determined by your location, skills, and experience.

Etsy uses two geographic pay zones to reflect the labor markets where we compete for talent: one called Geo-1, covering the New York City metropolitan area, San Francisco Bay Area, and Seattle metropolitan area, and one called Geo-2, covering all other U.S. locations. Salary ranges for this role vary by zone and are listed below.

Location

We prioritize candidates based within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office. Depending on proximity, we ask team members to come in once or twice per week. Remote candidates outside commutable distance may be considered on a case-by-case basis, with the expectation of occasional travel to the office. Learn more details about our work modes and workplace safety policies here.

Salary Range:

• Geo-1: 156,000.00 - 212,000.00 USD Annual • Geo-2: 141,000.00 - 191,000.00 USD Annual

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
