What’s the role?

Etsy’s Runtime Site Reliability Engineering team is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer to join us in our mission of building and supporting reliable large scale infrastructure. The SRE team owns several aspects of business critical infrastructure and services that enable developers to efficiently build and deliver code as well as support the uptime of etsy.com. As an SRE at Etsy, you’ll have the privilege of playing a support role for our developers to help them leverage the infrastructure we build and manage as well as assume ownership of a multitude of systems and ensure their reliability, scalability and maintainability.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Runtime SRE. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Etsy offers different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Learn more details about our work modes and workplace safety policies here.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

  • This team’s mission is to build and support world-class infrastructure that is responsible for the availability and reliability of the core infrastructure that powers etsy.com and its mobile apps.
  • The SRE team is committed to craft and maintain critical systems that power our 94M active buyers and 7.4M active sellers, with a goal of 99.95% uptime.
  • You'll collaborate with leading SRE professionals to influence the future of how Etsy builds, deploys and maintains reliable infrastructure that can automatically scale to meet the needs of our customers.
  • The SRE Team is dedicated to continuous improvement. All SREs are empowered and encouraged to enhance any system, even those not directly owned by your team.

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Develop and implement highly scalable and maintainable systems by contributing at multiple levels of our infrastructure stack using technologies like Chef, Terraform, Go, PHP, Prometheus, Consul and more…
  • Support the day-to-day operations of running a large scale application, including monitoring, measuring, and troubleshooting infrastructure and services.
  • Automate the upgrade procedures that range from Operating System upgrades to core application upgrades.
  • Manage multiple aspects of Etsy’s core infrastructure such as asset delivery, async compute processing, and scheduled tasks management–supporting millions of requests to etsy.com and its mobile apps daily.
  • Continually automate away toil that can be burdensome for teams.
  • Develop automation and processes to enable teams to deploy, manage, configure, scale, and monitor their applications.
  • Identify and implement application reliability and availability improvements.
  • Lead and participate in a world-class incident resolution process designed around a blameless learning culture.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

  • Technical Experience & Domain Expertise2–4 years of software engineering experience focusing on systems/infrastructure, network engineering, SRE, or DevOps—ideally within cloud environments. Strong grounding in TCP networking; comfortable handling CDN, DNS, CloudNAT, and A record/CNAME configurations across various engineering teams. Hands-on background administering and debugging Linux servers in production to maintain high availability and performance. Skill in analyzing system logs, metrics, and traces to diagnose performance issues and tune Linux environments. Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS) and VM-based architecture designs. Comfortable with concepts like autoscaling and capacity planning Proficiency using Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform) alongside configuration management frameworks (e.g., Chef, Ansible). Fluency in at least one modern language, such as Go, Python, PHP, or Ruby. Practical understanding of SLAs, SLOs, and SLIs, including how to define and apply them meaningfully.
  • Problem Solving & OwnershipA drive to understand underlying system mechanics and implement long-term fixes rather than quick workarounds. Proven ability to lead and deliver solutions for complex, loosely defined problems. A continuous-improvement mindset—eager to leave systems better than found and refine existing codebases.
  • Collaboration & CultureEqual value placed on empathy, clear communication, and technical acumen. Recognition that impactful engineering relies as much on effective interpersonal communication as on writing software. Enthusiasm for working in a collaborative team environment dedicated to driving continuous improvement for both the group and the company.

Compensation & Benefits

In addition to salary, you'll be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family. Base salary is determined by your location, skills, and experience.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
