De job van accountmanager is in principe een samensmelting van relatiebeheer en sales. De Accountmanager in De Randstad heeft heel veel taken om handen. Hij moet allereerst zorgen voor het behalen van verkoopresultaten. Dat doet hij door relatiebeheer, het zoeken naar nieuwe relaties en inventariseren van trends en opportunities. Hij beperkt zich tot een kleine set van relaties. Deze relaties hebben vaak een grote omvang of zijn anderszins belangrijk. De Key Accountmanager weet heel veel van de klant en kent de markt erg goed met al zijn kansen en bedreigingen. Door hun betrokkenheid en marktkennis kunnen zij van bijzondere waarde zijn voor het account. Doorgaans zijn Accountmanagers in de Randstad actief voor producten en diensten die een bepaalde complexiteit bezitten en waarvoor de aankoop een uitgebreid informatie en besluitvormingsproces aan vooraf gaat. Veel bedrijven in de Randstad leveren die complexe zaken waardoor je de functie van Accountmanagers veel ziet.
