- Research policy NWO The Dutch Research Council advances world-class scientific research with impact - - What does NWO do? - NWO strategy 2023-2026 - Legal information - Knowledge Coalition - Working at NWO - Netherlands Polar Programme is looking for an experienced chair - 29 September 2026 Renno Hokwerda The Netherlands Polar Programme, operated by NWO and funded by five ministries, is looking for a new independent chairperson for the Programme Committee. This committee oversees the strategic development and operation of this long-term programme for polar research, at the interface of science, policy and international collaboration. In this role, you will provide strategic oversight, governance experience and leadership across a broad network of scientists, ministries, NWO and international partners. You will chair three to four meetings per year, oversee the long-term strategic agenda, and represent the programme at meetings externally when asked. We are looking for an experienced leader with an understanding of science, policy and organisational dynamics, who enjoys bringing together diverse stakeholders and interests. An affinity or earlier experience with the Arctic region or Antarctica is an advantage, while independence from current Dutch polar science and policy is essential. The chair is appointed by NWO's Executive Board upon nomination by the Interdepartmental Polar Committee and the ENW and SSH Domain Boards. The appointment is, in principle, for four years, with the possibility of a second term. The preferred start date is the first or second quarter of 2027, but the precise timing can be discussed. The envisaged presentation and introduction to the community is on the NL Polar Day, 22 April 2027. The position is voluntary, but it entails clear responsibilities.
