Hij lijkt hem moeilijk te kunnen accepteren. Zijn echtgenote is een zorgzame vrouw. Ze heeft behoefte om haar hart te luchten. De Casemanager Dementie in jou besluit om in een natuurgebied, even verderop, met haar af te spreken. Je beheert immers zelf je agenda. Al wandelend haalt mevrouw de mooiste herinneringen op uit hun leven. Ondertussen, terwijl jullie praten, vraag je je af wat er in de tas zit die ze meedraagt. Van mijn 34-jarige loopbaan in de zorg, is dit de meest complexe functie. Overstijgend kijken en analyseren wat je wel doet (en wat niet). Er komt een hoop kijken bij je werk als Casemanager Dementie. We noemen het ook wel 'Dementie Verpleegkundige'. Want dat is jouw basis: Verpleegkundige. Gesprekstechnieken, samenwerking met andere zorginstellingen binnen je netwerk (en soms daarbuiten) of contact met de rechter over een uitspraak. En: soms bij een thuisbezoek een koud kopje thee, met ongekookt water rechtstreeks uit de kraan. Dat geeft natuurlijk niks: je drinkt hem op met dezelfde liefde, als waar hij mee is gezet. Steeds de juiste afwegingen maken of een opname op een bepaalde afdeling echt noodzakelijk is, vraagt veel van je.
