Over de organisatie Stichting Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Verkeersveiligheid (SWOV) is het onafhankelijke wetenschappelijke kennisinstituut voor verkeersveiligheid in Nederland. Vanuit Den Haag onderzoekt SWOV hoe het wegverkeer veiliger kan en vertaalt het wetenschappelijke inzichten naar beleid en praktijk. Zo draagt SWOV bij aan een veiliger verkeerssysteem en een samenleving waarin iedereen zich veilig kan verplaatsen. SWOV is een onafhankelijke en maatschappelijke organisatie zonder winstoogmerk. De belangrijkste financier is het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat (IenW). Daarnaast werkt SWOV in opdracht van onder meer provincies, gemeenten, kennisinstellingen en bedrijfsleven. Ook zijn er samenwerkingsverbanden met adviesbureaus, kennisinstellingen en maatschappelijke organisaties. SWOV participeert bovendien in Europese projecten. Wetenschap met maatschappelijke impact Onafhankelijkheid, wetenschappelijke integriteit en maatschappelijke relevantie vormen de basis van het werk. SWOV beantwoordt vragen die beleidsmakers en verkeersprofessionals in de praktijk tegenkomen. Het onderzoek is veelal interdisciplinair en ondergaat verschillende kwaliteitstoetsen. De kwaliteit en programmering worden mede bewaakt door een Wetenschappelijke Adviesraad en een Programma Adviesraad. De ongeveer 50 medewerkers van SWOV werken vanuit uiteenlopende academische disciplines, waaronder psychologie, civiele techniek, wis- en natuurkunde en bestuurskunde. Juist deze multidisciplinaire expertise is kenmerkend voor SWOV en stelt de organisatie in staat complexe vraagstukken rond verkeersveiligheid vanuit verschillende perspectieven te doorgronden en te vertalen naar effectieve oplossingen.
