In deze gemeente komen natuur, landbouw, recreatie en ondernemerschap samen. Er wonen bijna 25.0000 inwoners verdeeld over 17 dorpen en diverse buurtschappen. De gemeente zet met het coalitieakkoord "Eigen-wijs De Wolden, sterke dorpen, sterke toekomst" in op het behouden en versterken van de leefomgeving van haar inwoners. Ze zet in op initiatieven uit de dorpen en samenwerking met inwoners. Dit doet ze aan de hand van verschillende speerpunten: Sterke dorpen maken De Wolden; Wonen voor elke generatie; Ruimte voor landbouw en natuur; Samen verantwoordelijk voor opvang en meedoen; Duurzaam: doen wat past bij De Wolden; Oog voor mensen die steun nodig hebben; Ruimte voor ondernemerschap en werk; De Wolden toegankelijk en betrouwbaar; Financieel sterk De Wolden. De gemeentesecretaris is eerste adviseur voor het college bestaande uit burgemeester en drie wethouders. De raad bestaat uit 19 raadsleden. De uitvoering van haar werkzaamheden heeft gemeente De Wolden samen met gemeente Hoogeveen ondergebracht in de Samenwerkingsorganisatie De Wolden Hoogeveen (SWO). Met ruim 900 medewerkers geeft de SWO uitvoering aan de gemeentelijke taken en verleent diensten aan ongeveer 80.000 inwoners van de twee gemeenten. De SWO heeft als missie om de leefbaarheid te bevorderen voor alle mensen die wonen, werken en meedoen in De Wolden en Hoogeveen. De kernwaarden Vertrouwen, Verbinding en Eigenaarschap (VVE) staan hierbij centraal.
